ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica – The policewoman charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice and misconduct in a public office in relation to an ongoing investigation of rape and robbery, allegedly committed by another member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), was offered bail when she appeared in the St Elizabeth Parish Court on Wednesday.

Constable Lavern Hendricks, 44, was offered bail in the sum of $300,000 when she appeared before presiding judge Brodrick Smith.

She is to report to the New Market police station on Sundays between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. A fingerprint order was also made.

Hendricks is being represented by attorney Jodi Taylor and is scheduled to reappear in court on April 19 in Black River.

Reports are that a female motorist was stopped during a vehicle checkpoint operation on the Crawford main road and a breach of the Road Traffic Act was detected. Constable Alwayne Hill, who was previously charged, allegedly solicited money in exchange for not charging the woman. She was taken to an automated teller machine and was reportedly sexually assaulted.

The woman made a report to Constable Hendricks who was on duty. However, it is reported that Hendricks told the woman to lie in exchange for money. The woman constable also allegedly gave a false statement to colleagues, who had subsequently launched an investigation.

The report was elevated to a senior investigator and a case file was prepared and submitted to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), who recommended that Hill and Hendricks be charged. Constable Hill was later charged with rape, grievous sexual assault, forcible abduction, corruptly soliciting and simple larceny.
