Munro College cop third-straight gridiron title
MUNRO College won a third-straight Jamaica Secondary Schools Gridiron League championships after beating Newell High 40-8 in a repeat of the 2020 decider in an all-St Elizabeth showdown that took place at the University of Technology, Jamaica on Saturday, February 11.
Munro College took charge from the very start, Henry James returning an interception off a pass from quarterback Dorian Outten for a touchdown in the first series of the game, setting the tone for what was to come.
The champions raced to a 21-0 lead before Newell managed to get on the scoreboard, but by then it was all over as Munro College cruised to an emphatic win.
Munro College’s victory charge was led in part by the offensive line of Basil Wilson, Kemar Bucknor, Claymore Smith, Daniel Thompson and Naseef Azan who worked tirelessly throughout the game, providing a solid foundation for their teammates to build on.
Despite their loss, Newell High School showed great promise with some talented players on display — and with athletes such as Ishamar Howard, Shane Foster, Avon Robinson, and Derando Burton returning next season they will surely be a team to watch in the future.
It took four overtime periods to produce a winner in the third-place game during which May Day High held off deCarteret College 18-12.
