Calculus gets it right in Miracle Man Cup
Calculus strengthened his status as champion stayer with another inspiring victory in the $1.5-million Miracle Man Cup feature race at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Calculus, trained by Gary Subratie and ridden by Robert Halledeen, produced a devastating stretch run to win the Graded Stakes/Open Allowance for three-year-olds and upwards over nine-and-a-half furlongs (1,900 m) by an ever-increasing 2 1/4 lengths.
Calculus sat in second place for most of the way behind leader Lucy of Lucy (Jordan Barrett), who took the field around the clubhouse turn and on to the main track with a relaxed lead on the bridle. King Arthur (Omar Walker) and Miniature Man (Oshane Nugent) settled behind the leaders down the backstretch.
The victor maintained his gallop well until leaving the three-eighth marker, when he pointed on Lure of Lucy and King Arthur, who was hard-ridden on the outside. Turning for home with the lead, Calculus responded well to the urgings of Halledeen by turning on the afterburners and skipping clear for an easy win at the wire.
King Arthur was second as Positive ID (Prince Holder) came through later for third place. The final time for the race was recorded at 2:02.0 (25.3 x 50.4 x 1:15.4 x 1:41.0).
Trainer Ray Phillips and jockey Roger Hewitt were the stars in their respective categories after winning two races each on the 10-race card.
Phillips and Hewitt teamed up with Rum With Me to win the second race. Phillips saddled his second winner in the ninth race with Just Move In (Matthew Bennett), while Hewitt rode Queen Zan to victory in the eighth race for trainer Junior Small for his double.
Racing continues today with 11 races. First post is scheduled for 11:15 am.
