Shizzle Sherlock ready to ‘Bet’ on new single
When dancehall artiste Shizzle Sherlock released his soca single Wake Up last summer, he predicted the single would hand him the big musical break he had been searching for.
But, the track’s trajectory was stalled after the entertainer learnt that the single was not voiced on an original rhythm. The latter meant the song could not be released on certain platforms and Sherlock’s hopes of obtaining a hit single were dashed.
Having to return to the drawing board, the entertainer decided that like the soca track, he needed to keep things light and fun. With that in mind, a catchphrase from an interview with dancer Lugo Lugo and a style he says is irresistible, Shizzle Sherlock cooked up the single BET. He believes he has finally found the track that will follow in the footsteps of his 2016 hit, Think A Chattingz.
“Mi did haffi tap into mi creativity again, link up mi producer Consequence and go back inna di studio and just do di right thing. Mi get couple riddims and a few a dem mi did vibe wid until me find BET,” he said, highlighting how Lugo Lugo’s infamous interview on respect proved to be an inspiration for the new track.
“Mi buck up on the interview weh she a say she nah get the respect she deserve inna dancehall and people fi hail her when dem see her and me a say ‘no mi like da style deh’ so mi cut out part a di interview and use as the intro and the punch to my song.”
He added: “Mi use her style, too, because the song is a happy song weh a say a long time we a star we nuh affi ask and yuh fi respect dat,” he continued. “It’s a statement, we nah hype pan nobody but we a make dem know we a star too, in case dem figet.”
The entertainer said the song, which was released on February 3, has been getting huge feedback on the international circuit and he’s looking forward to a deja vu scenario as he anticipates it breaking on the local scene.
“Mi feel da song here a go buss just like Think A Chattingz. Chattingz buss when mi put it pan di internet and it start get the buzz it supposed to get, but before that the people a foreign did love it. When it start get popular that’s when the selectors a Jamaica catch on and really give it a strength,” he said, admitting that sometimes it takes a little more effort to get local support in the industry.
“Selectors nah buss song again. Dem wait till it have a certain buzz den dem jump on. A so it did go wid Chattingz and a so mi think it ago go wid dis. It a play a yaad already innu but a from some young selectors weh nobody nuh really know. Everybody soon catch on still.”
BET is out on all digital platforms.
