KC, XLCR hold on to Corporate Area Championships titles

KINGSTON College (KC) were pushed all the way to the line by rivals Calabar High, but in the end the North Street-based school managed to retain their Corporate Area Championships title on Saturday’s final of the two-day event at the National Stadium.

KC tallied 427 points to win the title ahead of Calabar (415) and Jamaica College (JC) on 398.5. They were followed by Wolmer’s (121), Excelsior (108), St George’s College (79.5), Camperdown (5)5, Campion College (29), Ardenne (15) and Holy Trinity (14) for the top 10.

KC closed out the championship by winning the 4x400m relay in 3:12.65 minutes, with JC second in 3:15.15 while Calabar took third spot in 3:17.65.

Meanwhile, Excelsior retained their girls’ title comfortably after tallying 403 points ahead of Wolmer’s who amassed 310. Immaculate (280), The Queen’s School (193.5), Convent of Mercy (120.5), Camperdown (118), St Andrew High (60.5), Holy Childhood (48), Campion College (33.5), and St Hugh’s (33) round out the 10 teams.

Mickalia Gardener and Natrece East of Wolmer’s were sprint double champions in Class One and Three, respectively. Gardener, who won the 100m title on Friday, returned Saturday to capture the 200m event as well in 24.69.

Gardener, who had an outstanding championships, won four gold at the event after helping her school to victories in the Class One 4x100m relay as well as the 4x400m relay.

East, who has been having an outstanding season, clocked a season’s best 24.68 with -4.6 metres per second headwind to win the event.

Breana Brown of Excelsior was second in 25.11 while third went to Janelia Williams, also of Excelsior, in 25.11. The lanky East also helped the Micheal Carr-coached team to victory in the Girls’ Class Three 4x100m relay event.

Camperdown’s Nicoy Drummond produced a brilliant stretch run to nip Calabar’s Jehlani Gordon on the line and win the Boys’ Class One 200m final in 21.60. Gordon was second in a personal best time of 21.64. KC’s Emmanuel Rwotomiya was third in 21.79. Pre-race favourite Adrian Kerr from KC, however, pulled up injured at the 100-metre mark and did not finish the race.

Amal Glasgow from KC sped to a season’s best 47.27 to win the Boys’ Class One 400m event ahead of JC’s Malique Smith-Band who was second in a personal best time of 47.58, while third went to Marchino Rose from KC in a season’s best time of 48.59.

Excelsior’s Diandra Kelly clocked a personal best time of 55.00 to win the Class One 400m final. Clan Carty’s Tashsana Hue was a distant second in a personal best time of 56.46, while third went to Wolmer’s Hannah Charles in 57.92.

KC’s Shamari Jennings won the Boys Class One 400m hurdles final in a lifetime-best 52.33. Shadane Smith of Calabar was second in a personal best time of 52.58 while third went to Priucewell Martin, also in a personal best time of 52.67.

Excelsior’s T’Kyla Bennett captured the girls’ equivalent in 1:01.20 minutes in front of Clan Carty’s Tashsana Hue who was second in personal best time of 1:03.87. Third went to Excelsior’s Shaneil Johnson in 1:03.96.

Jade-Ann Smith from Excelsior won the Girls’ Class One jong jump with a mark of 5.52m, ahead of Mireya Simpson of Immaculate (5.49m) and Jada Kamtha of Wolmer’s (5.38m). Zoelle Jamel from Immaculate led home a one-two finish for her school in the girls’ javelin after winning the event with a throw of 31.59m, in front of her teammate Toniann Bryan with 30.90m, and Jemecia Roberts of Mona (29.08m).
