St Mary Municipal Corporation pays tribute to late councillor
MEMBERS of the St Mary Municipal Corporation were in a solemn mood on Thursday as they paid tribute to the late councillor of the Islington Division Lincoln “Dicko” Dixon, who died suddenly just over a week ago.
Chairman of the municipal corporation Mayor Richard Creary lauded Dixon for the stellar work he had done in his division.
“Councillor Dixon had the distinction of being the only councillor, from either side, to be elected to serve two terms [in the Islington Division]. This showed the mettle of the man. It is obvious he served his people well,” said Creary.
In the meantime, councillors from both sides of the political divide remembered Dixon as a dedicated, compassionate, caring person who always had a smile that brightened a room.
Councillor Hugh Bryan (Jamaica Labour Party, Annotto Bay Division) said it was a sad time for all at the municipal corporation.
According to Bryan, he had known Dixon before politics and he had always shown respect to him. Bryan added that he would never forget the smile of Dixon, who he said genuinely cared for others.
Former Mayor of Port Maria Levan Freeman (People’s National Party, Belfield Division) told the meeting that he was still waiting to see Dixon lean to him to whisper some comment.
“At this time my heart is heavy. He was dedicated to his task and he was a resource person to many of us due to his background in agriculture and public works,” said Freeman.
Dixon was the first councillor to hold the Islington Division for two terms and was the youngest such councillor. He was also the chairman of the PNP’s Region 2, which covers the parishes of St Thomas, Portland, and St Mary.
He died four days after burying his son Juhvan.
Dixon defeated the JLP’s Terry-Ann Davidson to win the Islington Division in the 2016 local government elections, having first won the division in 2012.
