Reggae artiste Kirk Diamond won his second JUNO Award for Reggae Recording of the Year on Saturday night.

He won for the song Reggae Party, which features 14-year-old singer Kairo McLean — who won the award last year for Easy Now — and producer Finn.

“Winning this time signifies that my work representing reggae and the culture is still being recognised at the highest level here in Canada. I’m extremely happy about it because I know what it means to the community and to the other independent musicians, not just in our genre,” Kirk Diamond disclosed in an interview with the Jamaica Observer on Saturday night shortly after accepting the award at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The other nominees in the category were Water by Ammoye, Like a Star by Celena, Jah Love by Exco Levi, and In the Streets by Kairo McLean.

Kirk Diamond, who is originally from Spanish Town in St Catherine, said he had an idea that he would have won.

“We aim to make the highest quality music possible. I’m glad the Junos agreed,” he reasoned.

The JUNO Awards, Canada’s equivalent to the Grammys, was broadcast live on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

This was his fifth nomination. He won in 2018 for the EP Greater.

The JUNO winner was Reggae Party had an interesting birthing.

“Finn produced the song along with contributions from two members of my band, Joshua Lucas and Luke Skye. How the song came to be, Finn and I were listening to songs from my album that we are working on. Then he remembered the rhythm. I took maybe two minutes to write the hook and verse, then due to the respect I have for Kairo’s writing at his age, I asked him to be a part of it,” shared the artiste.

There is new music on the way, he confirmed for the Observer.

“Presently, Finn and I are planning the release of the album entitled Dread. And I have already shot a few videos for the album,” he said.
