Rifle-toting man in video being sought by cops
The police on Wednesday appealed to the public for assistance in finding a man, seen in a viral video, holding what appeared to be a rifle in the air while bragging about having access to an arsenal of similar weapons.
In the video, which has been widely circulated on social media, the man who is dressed in a red T-shirt is seen holding a firearm with an extended magazine.
“Nuff a dem yah dung yah and we buy couple rifle down the road too. All bwoy weh know seh dem naa link wid mi, we have some rifle shot fi dem. You think a joking thing,” he says, before paying respect to one of his friends whom he refers to as “Sonny”. Of note is that it appears in the video as if his action is being supported by people surrounding him.
At the moment, cops have their work cut out for them in finding the man. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Stephanie Lindsay, who is in charge of the Corporate Communications Unit, the video has been circulated in police WhatsApp groups to see if he is known by them.
“The video has been widely circulated within the force to see if anybody can identify him. We are not sure where the video was done and we are not even sure if it was in Jamaica. We have not gotten any feedback from anybody at this time. Usually, when we see a video like that, we circulate it and hope somebody will give us some information. If we get any tips from the public about who he is, we will take steps to find him. People can give the information anonymously,” the senior cop told the Jamaica Observer on Wednesday.
The Observer sought comments from a popular criminal lawyer who requested that he remain anonymous in this article, who reasoned that there was no way to prove if it was an authentic firearm.
“I don’t see how they could prove it is a gun versus somebody just having a prop for a video. How can you prove it is a gun if it wasn’t discharged? There is no ballistics certificate to prove it was a firearm,” the attorney said.
