Bacchanal ‘comes of age’
Soca lovers filed into Mas Camp for Bacchanal Friday at the start of the weekend to celebrate the 21st anniversary milestone of the event and, by all indications, they were satisfied.
Not even the excitement of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Championships on at the neighbouring National Stadium could dull the sparkle and success of Bacchanal. It was nothing short of the perfect bash to celebrate Carnival’s resurgence.
From approximately 9:00 pm to almost 3:00 am DJs Kurt Riley, Nocturnal, Richie Ras, along with Marc and Cyclone from Coppershot kept the momentum going with music through the ages.
The icing on the cake, in true birthday fashion, was a sample from almost every genre.
Emcee Marlon Musique displayed no sign of exhaustion as he hyped up the patrons who came decked out in Monday wear, and even a few who boldly opted to reprise their costumes from last Carnival season.
VIP attendees enjoyed unlimited drink-inclusive options all night, as well as the different stalls offering pan chicken, hot dogs, soups, and other snacks came in clutch to ward off possible hangovers.
By the time the event reached its peak, scores of rags were seen being waved in the air and the gyration continued until the very last minute of the celebration.
Michael Ammar Jr, co-director of Bacchanal Jamaica, wore a pleased expression of his face, and expressed pride at the achievement.
“Long time we’ve been playing Mas!” he declared. “Entertainment products don’t usually last 21 years, and we’ve lasted, and I think it’s because we keep changing and we keep reinventing ourselves and we keep entering into these partnerships and giving the people what they want. We’re proud of it,” he told the Jamaica Observer, noting that he personally helped with the set-up of the venue, including the outstanding elevated DJ platform.
“It’s very good. I mean, we had a little late start because of Champs, but it worked out, and people came out and supported,” Ammar Jr confirmed.
With Carnival Road March exactly two weeks away, the co-director said everything is set to provide revellers with a memorable experience.
“We’re ready for J’Ouvert and that’s gonna be massive. This is just a warm-up compared to what’s coming,” he explained.
