Irwin Academy reclaim lead in Sandals U-17 football competition
IRWIN, St James — Irwin Academy reclaimed the lead in the St James Football Association Sandals Resorts International Under-17 competition with one round to go after last weekend’s slate of matches.
Irwin Academy edged Granville United 1-0 in their game, while Athletes In Action (AIA), who led the tables going into the round, were held 0-0 by fourth-placed Green Pond.
Irwin Academy lead with 15 points, one more that AIA, followed closely by St James High who beat Montego Bay United (MBU) 3-0 to be on 13 points with Green Pond on 10.
Granville United are in fifth place on nine points, two more than Montego Bay Boys Club who hammered St James Academy 5-2. MBU are on one point, while St James Academy have lost all six games played so far.
Nicardo Tomlinson’s 61st minute goal made the difference for Irwin Academy in their win over Granville United and was the first game that Detroy Reid did not score.
Jaleel Barnett scored all three goals for St James High in their win, opening the scoring in the 37th minute to lead 1-0 at half-time before adding goals in the 48th and 62nd minutes.
Thior Brissett also had a hat-trick for Boys Club in their win, scoring in the eighth, 17th, and 55th minutes, while Mario Watt scored in the 75th minute and Malike Stewart in the 76th minute.
Akeem Walker had made the scores 1-1 when he scored for St James Academy in the 10th minute, while Devano Brown scored a second in the 61st minute.
