Stona breaks University of Arkansas discus record

Jamaica’s Roje Stona broke the University of Arkansas school record when he placed second in the men’s discus throw with a personal best 66.64m at Saturday’s final day of the 63rd Mt San Antonio College Relays held in Walnut, California.

Stona, who transferred from Clemson University last year, broke the previous mark 62.60m that was set 41 years ago in 1982 by Scott Lofquist and was also beaten by fellow Jamaican Ralford Mullings who was fourth with his season best 62.79m.

Stona, who is fourth best all time by a Jamaican, moved into second place on the NCAA outdoors list behind Mykolas Alekna of the University of California.

At the Mule Relays hosted by Central Missouri, former Kingston College athlete Radjindra Campbell won the men’s shot put with a season’s best 19.84m, the best mark by a Jamaican man so far this season.

Former Petersfield thrower Kevin Nedrick, a senior at Liberty University, won the men’s discus throw at the Bryan Clay Invitational held at Azuza Pacific with 58.40m and also won the men’s shot put Elite at Mt SAC with 17.83m.

Romaine Beckford of the University of South Florida won the men’s high jump with a clearance of 2.20m while his teammate Sanique Walker ran a personal best 57.06 seconds for fourth place in the women’s 400m hurdles, beating her previous best 57.79 seconds.

Xavier Nairne of the University of Oregon ran 10.43 seconds (0.2m/s) in the men’s 100m while Niesha Burgher of the University of Texas-El Paso ran 23.40 seconds (1.3m/s) in the 200m.

At the Long Beach Invitational, former Calabar High runner Shevioe Reid of the University of South Florida won the men’s 200m with 20.87 seconds (0.7m/s).

World Championship finalist Wayne Pinnock was second in the men’s long jump with 8.01m (0.5m/s) and his teammates Carey McLeod was third with 7.98m (1.1m/s), Ryan Brown was fifth with 7.68m (0.8m/s) while Shakwon Coke jumped a wind-aided 7.24 (2.6m/s).

At the Virginia Grand Prix, Owayne Owens of the University of Virginia produced a personal best 7.59m (0.6m/s) to win the men’s long jump.
