Gunmen shot a Beryllium security guard and a civilian during a robbery in Albion, St Thomas, Saturday morning as the security team serviced an automated teller machine (ATM) at a petrol station.

Up to press time, the police did not give an update on the condition of both injured individuals. Earlier the Jamaica Observer had learnt that the security guard was in hospital.

The police had also not made clear whether the gunmen, who video footage showed were travelling in two motor cars, had got any money in the attack. However, the footage shows the men, with knapsacks on their backs, firing rifles while fleeing to the motor cars, then driving away.

The Sunday Observer was told that the vehicles were intercepted a short while after the attack and men engaged the police in a shoot-out. The outcome of that shooting was unknown at press time, according to Senior Superintendent of Police Stephanie Lindsay, who heads the constabulary’s Corporate Communications Unit.

“We are trying to confirm whether money was taken. A short while ago, following the attack on Beryllium, there was an active shooting scene. I am awaiting to hear from investigators to know the outcome,” Lindsay said.

Earlier this month the police said that they had arrested seven people in connection with an attack on a Beryllium crew as they were about to service ATMs at a Scotiabank branch in Portmore. The robbers made off with more than $23 million in that attack.

In February, gunmen shot dead a security guard and injured two others as Beryllium security personnel were delivering cash to JN Bank at Portmore Pines Plaza in St Catherine.

The criminals escaped with at least $10 million in that heist.
