Barbados take down T&T; Jamaica, Windwards post easy wins

BASSETERRE, St Kitts (CMC) – Teenaged right-hander Shunelle Sawh struck the only half-century of the opening round but the knock went in vain as title-holders Barbados made light work of long-standing rivals Trinidad and Tobago in the Women’s Super50 Cup here Monday.

Chasing 162 at Warner Park, Barbados strolled to their target in the 39th over with West Indies all-rounder Aaliyah Alleyne top-scoring with an unbeaten 48 from 51 deliveries, while Kycia Knight got 37 from 66 balls and her twin Kyshona, 35 from 61 deliveries.

Left-arm spinner Steffie Soogrim finished with two for 36.

Earlier, T&T were dismissed for 161 in the 44th over with Sawh top-scoring with 68 off 113 deliveries at the top of the order.

The 18-year-old counted half-dozen fours, adding 60 for the fourth wicket with West Indies strokemaker Britney Cooper (32), to pull her side around from trouble at 27 for three in the 12th over.

When Cooper fell in the 25th over after striking three fours in a 48-ball knock, Sawh put on a further 34 for the sixth wicket with captain Anisa Mohammed (16), earning T&T precious runs late on.

Seamer Allison Gordon (4-36) and leg-spinner Keila Elliot (4-40) claimed four-wicket hauls, T&T losing their last five wickets for 26 runs.

In reply, Barbados suffered a massive blow when they lost West Indies captain Hayley Matthews for 10, with 15 on the board in the second over.

However, two half-century stands then repaired the innings. Firstly, the Knight twins put on 74 for the second, Kycia belting two fours and a six and Kyshona counting four fours.

When they fell to successive deliveries in the 23rd over, Alleyne assumed responsibility for the chase, striking seven fours in a 72-run, unbroken fifth wicket partnership with Shakera Selman (21 not out).

At St Paul’s Sports Complex, West Indies players Natasha McLean (33 not out) and Rashada Williams (32) got among the runs as Jamaica calmly chased down 121 to beat Leeward Islands by six wickets.

Marquee West Indies batsman and captain Stafanie Taylor made 22 in a key 44-run, third wicket stand with Williams before pershing at the start of the 16th over.

Leewards were earlier dismissed for 120 with Terez Parker getting 33 and Divya Saxena, 30, while Celina Whyte grabbed five for 31 in a Player-of-the-Match performance.

In the other game at Conaree, West Indies star Afy Fletcher struck an unbeaten 44 as Windward Islands easily overhauled a paltry target of 80 to beat Guyana by nine wickets.
