Tributes flow for Boom Dandimite: Scare Dem Crew deejay remembered as positive, good man

Members of the dancehall fraternity are united in their tributes to veteran deejay Boom Dandimite, who died at a US hospital Sunday after suffering a relapse during his recovery from a car accident in April.

Dandimite was a former member of the Scare Dem Crew – along with friends Nitty Kutchie, Harry Toddler and Elephant Man – which found fame in the 1990s with hits such as Pure Gal and Many Many.

In a heartfelt message posted to Instagram following news of Dandimite’s passing, Toddler urged his followers to “Just remember my brother … I am asking the world… I can’t believe all now, we have so many things to do in music this year.. Boom Dandimite rest well my bro, we will never forget u in this lifetime we have left.”

Sinjay Mavado posted a photo of himself and Dandimite enjoying a game of draughts with the caption: “RIP my bro bro Jah know good ppl always go first wings up in Zion my DJ.”

Dancehall veteran Bounty Killer, who has credited Dandimite with encouraging him to go to the studio that led to his breakthrough in music, expressed sadness at his friend’s passing with heartbreak and angel emojis.

Meanwhile, deejay Wilful Skilful, who was also hurt in the car crash that claimed the life of Dandimite, said: “Words can’t explain @dancehalldandimite my bro… big dreams yuu favourite skilful song sorry mi legend!!!!!! US-based DJ Bobby Konders also expressed sadness at the former Scare Dem Crew member’s passing.

“Sad to hear this. Original Scare Dem Crew member Boom Dandimite’s passing. R.I.P. & condolences to his family. We had many dubplate sessions in Brooklyn in the 90’s in my apt with (Bounty Killer) and (Elephant Man),” Konders wrote on social media.

Bling Dawg remembered Boom Dandimite as a “positive vibes joyful youth” and expressed condolences to his family and friends.

“Each moment in life cherish them… never take the simple things in life for granted,” added the former Alliance Crew member.

BBC Radio 1Xtra DJ and presenter Seani B was also among the many expressing heartfelt tributes.

“My Bro, I appreciate the love, friendship, and hospitality you showed me when I was on the rock…. Condolences to the family and friends of a 90s Dancehall Star,” he wrote, adding “Your name will forever be in the Dancehall Scrolls Boom Dandimite.”

In late April, Dandimite and rising artiste Willful Skilful were injured in a car accident on Half Way Tree Road in the vicinity of a popular bakery.

Dandimite was hospitalised while Wilful Skilful was discharged and sent home. Days later, Boom Dandimite, whose real name is Herman Stewart, was discharged from hospital.

However, the veteran deejay reportedly suffered a relapse during his recovery and left the island for the United States for treatment over the weekend.

“Boom Dandimite travelled to the US (Saturday), but after he came off the plane, he fainted away. He just got sick not long after reaching the US. He started to foam at the mouth, so they rushed him to a hospital and he died (Sunday) morning,” a source told OBSERVER ONLINE.
