Dancehall sensation Lanae delights European fans on ‘Dancehall Whine’ EP tour
Dancehall fans in Europe got a three-week crash course in whining during Lanae’s tour through the continent to promote her recently released EP ‘Dancehall Whine’.
The artiste, who returned to Jamaica earlier this week, recounted an experience of pure vibes from patrons who came to her nine shows – which were spread across France, Belgium and Germany.
Lanae told OBSERVER ONLINE that since this was her first time touring Europe, she did not know what to expect but had a made-up mind to put on a great show nonetheless.
“The response from the people was so good. Since I was going there for the first time, I didn’t have any expectations; I just knew I was going to go there and do my thing. But the reception from the people was extremely good. You can even see it from the videos that they were vibing with me and participating with me on stage so it was just a really good experience from start to finish,” Lanae said.
As for her mode of preparation on tour, the beauty queen-turned-artiste revealed that after the first show, she took stock of fans’ reactions to her music and curated a set list that garnered the best reactions for the remaining eight stops.
“After the first show, I got an idea of what the people were like and how to talk to them so from that I knew exactly how I was going to approach each show. I realised that they preferred it when I talked directly to the crowd and interacted with them and brought them up on stage because they wanted to have fun with me. So I just organised my set like that moving forward for the other shows,” she explained.
“I also paid attention to the songs that they reacted to a lot like ‘Too Young’ with Vybz Kartel, ‘Whine Up’, which was produced on a really upbeat dancehall riddim, ‘Reverse Mi Waist’ with Konshens and ‘Bunx It’ with Leftside. So I just pay attention to those aspects and position my songs at the right points of my show to make sure it is really enjoyable,” Lanae disclosed.
Lanae stated that she was pleased with the great reception and the high energy she received during her performances, which only got better with each song. She said that even when she performed her new song ‘Whine Up’ from the six-track EP, patrons went crazy and started dancing from the first line “body good, body fine, body clean”.
Now that she is back home, the artiste, given name Lanae Gillette, is excited to continue doing her work and finding other Jamaican artistes, and those worldwide, to collaborate with on projects and widen her fan base.
She is also looking forward to her next big event in September, where she will return to France and perform at the Karibbean Rendez-Vous Festival.
“I have a booking coming up in September in Paris. I am going to be at the Karibbean Rendez-Vous Festival which is really big so I am really excited. Beenieman and Busy Signal will be at that show as well, along with artistes from other countries. So I am just going to continue to do my thing, and keep doing collaborations because these are important as well to get introduced to new fans especially outside of Jamaica,” Lanae explained.
The EP, ‘Dancehall Whine’, which features Nessa Preppy from Trinidad and Tobago, along with local acts, is now available on Spotify, Apple Music and Audiomack.
