Jack Johnson hits the Billboard Reggae Albums chart
Multi-platinum-selling American singer and musician Jack Johnson makes his debut on this week’s Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
In Between Dub, an 11-track set released June 2 via Brushfire/Republic Records, opens at #4.
The project features collaborations with Lee “Scratch” Perry, Subatomic Sound System, Dennis Bovell, Scientist, Nightmares on Wax, Monk, Yaadcore, and Mad Professor. It is led by two previously released singles, Traffic in the Sky and Better Together.
In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, Johnson explained how the idea for a dub album came about.
“This album came together from conversations with my friends at our record label Brushfire Records. We had a connection to send some songs to Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. When he sent the songs back to us in his style, we loved the way it sounded. That gave us the idea to put together a whole album of songs from my catalogue, interpreted by artistes that we love and respect,” said Johnson.
Born in Hawaii, Johnson said he had no intentions of becoming a musician. He shared that his work has been inspired by multiple genres of music, including reggae.
“I never thought that music was going to be a career for me. It was just always something I loved to do. [The] music that I make is inspired by many genres. Although I play mostly acoustic guitar, which is influenced mainly by Hawaiian music, many of the tones and rhythms on our albums are emulating our favourite reggae albums.”
His love for reggae has led him to work with some of the genre’s biggest names, including Toots and the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, and Stephen Marley.
Back on this week’s Billboard Reggae Albums chart, Legend by Bob Marley and the Wailers continues to lead the pack for a 178th week.
Best of Shaggy: The Boombastic Collection by Shaggy retains its #2 position, while Sean Paul’s Dutty Classics Collection is steady at #3.
Stick Figure occupies #5 and #6 with Wisdom and World on Fire, while UB40’s Greatest Hits dips one place to #7.
Set in Stone by Stick Figure is #8 while No Love by Byron Messia backtracks from #8 to #9.
Live at Red Rocks by Rebelution is #10.
The Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Metro Boomin Presents (Metro Boomin) soundtrack, which features songs with Jamaicans Toian and Shenseea, along with a track produced by Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor, scores big on multiple charts.
It opened at #1 in Ireland and occupies top 10 positions in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. On the all-genre Billboard 200 albums chart, it debuted at #7, while on Soundtrack Albums chart it ranks at #1. It is #33 on Top Current Album Sales, #2 on Top Rap Albums, and #2 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
One of the songs from the soundtrack, Linkup by Metro Boomin with Don Toliver, Wizkid, and Jamaicans Beam and Toian debuts on multiple charts.
It enters the Billboard Global 200 at #167, Nigeria Hot 100 at #90, and #69 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100.
American singer Janelle Monae’s Lipstick Lover, which samples Mad Cobra’s gold selling single Flex, stays put at #13 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart. It steps up from #39 to #35 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay.
Over to the South Florida Reggae chart, Ed Robinson spends a second week at #1 with I’m Not That Guy.
Don’t Let Me Go by Etana clocks its third week in the #1 spot on the New York Reggae chart.
Over on the Rebel Vibez Top Ten Canadian Reggae chart, Single Girl Blues by Blk Orchid and Empress Divine is still on top. Meanwhile, What a Joy by The Memberz and multi JUNO award winner Exco Levi steps in at #5.
