UPDATE: PNP condemns burning of constituency office, awaits outcome of investigation
KINGSTON, Jamaica— The People’s National Party (PNP) on Tuesday expressed deep concern regarding the fire which destroyed the constituency office in Southeast St Catherine Monday night.
The party denounced the act, stating that “the PNP condemns any form of violence or destruction of property, irrespective of the motivation or circumstances. We believe in the democratic principles of peaceful dialogue, inclusivity and fair representation, and any act that threatens these values is contrary to our beliefs”.
In a statement, the PNP sought to assure the public and the constituents of Southeast St Catherine that it is actively monitoring the situation and eagerly awaiting the outcome of the investigations. The Opposition also called on the authorities to “leave no stone unturned” while they carry out a probe into the incident.
“We are relying on the relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the incident, leaving no stone unturned,” the PNP said.
“While we await the findings, the PNP is actively working to establish temporary arrangements to ensure the continuity of services and engagement with the constituents of SE St Catherine. We remain committed to serving the needs of the community and are exploring all available options to restore and rebuild the constituency office as quickly as possible,” the party added.
It went on to call for calm among party members and supporters while urging them to refrain from any actions or conjecture that may escalate tensions.
“It is essential that we allow the investigative process to run its course and provide the necessary space for law enforcement agencies to carry out their duties effectively,” the party said in a statement.
Last night’s fire is the second such deliberate act of arson in the troubled PNP constituency in five weeks. Units from the Jamaica Fire Brigade were swiftly dispatched to deal with the fire, which damaged the roof of the building.
In early May, supporters of Alric Campbell were riled up at a decision to scupper his bid to be the man charged with winning the seat for the party at the next general election and be the party’s standard bearer in South East St Catherine.
Angered by the decision, protesters burned images of the newly appointed Dr Alfred Dawes in reaction to the party’s decision to sideline Campbell.
The party said it will continue to update the public on any significant developments related to the investigation.
