Toian’s web-slinging boost
Jamaican singer Toian says her feature on the Billboard-charting single Link Up by Metro Boomin with Don Toliver, WizKid, and fellow Jamaican, Beam, has exposed her to a wide audience.
Link Up, which was produced by Metro Boomin, Al Cres and Tyshane Thompson, debuted at #69 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100, #167 on Billboard Global 200, and #90 on the Nigeria Hot 100. The song is also #4 on Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100.
Link Up is featured on the Metro Boomin Presents Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse soundtrack which was released June 2 via Republic Records.
The soundtrack debuted at #1 in Ireland and Canada, and has made the top 10 in several countries.
On the Billboard 200 albums chart, it debuted at #7, while topping the soundtrack album chart.
A deluxe edition of the soundtrack, released on June 5, features the Stephen McGregor-produced Take it to the Top by Becky G and Ayra Starr, and Infamous by Shenseea featuring Myke Towers.
“I’m being exposed to a wider audience. WizKid, Don Toliver and Beam fans are incredible and have been embracing me. I hope to do more collaborations with them in the future,” Toian disclosed in an interview with the Jamaica Observer.
She added: “I had watched the first Spider-Man in theatres, so when I heard I was going to be a part of the soundtrack for the second one it was an incredible feeling.”
Toian explained how the collaboration came about.
“I was in Atlanta and I ended up doing a session with Metro Boomin, Beam and Al Cres — who I was working closely with at the time on Rihanna’s album. One night we ended up making this amazing song but we had no idea what or who it was going to be for. We were just having fun,” said Toian.
She continued: “Don Toliver and WizKid recorded their verses after. We had the best time working on this together; it was like a bunch of friends hanging out making good music. The chemistry was undeniable and you can feel it in the song.”
Toian says the response to the song has floored her.
“The response has been incredible. The feedback has been great overall, everyone’s been loving the record and it’s climbing the charts. I feel blessed to be a part of it.”
Toian has collaborated with some high-profile dancehall acts, including Vybz Kartel and Skillibeng, but Link Up is undoubtedly her biggest collaboration thus far.
“I’m living my dreams right now and there’s nothing more I can ask for. The journey has had its ups and downs, but there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing,” she said.
Said Toian: “It’s been three years since I signed my first major record deal. I’d say this Spider-Man placement for sure has been a highlight, and then also working with Selena Gomez on her upcoming album.”
Toian (given name Toian Gichie) is originally from Westgate in Montego Bay. She attended Mount Alvernia High School and later Montego Bay Community College.
For eight years she resided between Jamaica and Miami. For the past year she has resided in Los Angeles.
Asked how her humble beginnings in Montego Bay helped to shape or influence her music, Toian said, “Anyone in my class in high school can tell you that I was always singing and beating on the desk at any chance that I got. I would sneak out and go to Pier 1 or Margaritaville just to hear the latest songs and to get my songs played by any DJ I could find. Montego Bay taught me the grind.”
Said Toian: “I want to release a timeless body of work that will be remembered for generations to come.”
