Historic Esher

MONTEGO BAY, St James – Esher Primary became the first school from Hanover to win the Western Primary Athletics Championships after they overtook former champions Howard Cooke late on Saturday’s second day at Cornwall College for a well-deserved victory.

Esher Primary tallied 284 points, 20.5 more than Howard Cooke Primary’s 263.5 points, followed by Barracks Road Primary at 205, Hague Primary with 134, and Duncans All-Age’s 123, filling out the top five.

Howard Cooke Primary led with 50.50 points after six finals at the end of the first day, 16.5 better than second-placed Esher Primary at 37, followed by Barracks Road Primary with 32, Falmouth All-Age racking up 26, and Green Pond Primary in fifth with 24.5 points.

There were four double winners at the two-day championships. Akeelah McDonald of Howard Cooke Primary won the girls’ Class 6 200m/400m double; her teammate Thia Chrisann Erickson won the girls’ Class 7 100m/200m double; Duncans All-Age’s impressive Javier Lawson won the boys’ Class 6 sprint double, and Anchovy Primary’s Thomicka Needham took the boys’ Class 8 80m/150m double.

Esher Primary’s pair of Javaughn Dennett and Amelia Waite won the boys’ and girls’ high jump Open, respectively, on Saturday, with Dennett clearing 1.40m and Waite 1.35m.

Barracks Road Primary’s Zwange Edwards won the girls’ Class 5 100m in 14.52 seconds and was second in the 200m in 29.32 seconds, behind Howard Cooke Primary’s Veneisha Pottinger who won with 28.74 seconds.

Nikoli Blair of Esher won the Class 5 boys’ 200m in 26.77 seconds, but was beaten into third place in the 100m that was won by Catherine Hall’s Marques Reid at 13.61 seconds, just ahead of Howard Cooke Primary’s Ismael Wilkins’ 13.64 seconds.

The Barracks Road Primary pair of Eric Edwards and Jamielia Sylvester won the boys’ and girls’ Class 5 400m titles, respectively.

Edwards ran 1:01.55 seconds to beat Esher Primary’s Demaro Gordon at 1:03.99 seconds and Barracks Road’s Jayden McIntosh at 1:04.52 seconds.

Sylvester clocked 1:07.63 seconds, beating Esher Primary’s Tyshari Pinnock at 1:10.44 seconds and Duncans All-Age’s Khortnie Eccleston, with 1:11.38 seconds.
