‘Not involved’
Attorney-at-law Peter Champagnie, representing popular dancehall artiste Jahshii, has declared his client’s innocence regarding allegations making the rounds on social media that he was involved in activities leading to a death presently under police investigation.
“Jahshii has declared, in no uncertain terms, that, contrary to social media reports suggesting that he had a hand to play in the demise of Omar Wright, he was not involved, in no shape or form, in that matter or any other matter,” Champagnie told the Jamaica Observer.
The deejay had surrendered himself into the custody at Constant Spring Police Station in the company of his attorneys, Richard Lynch and King’s Counsel Champagnie on Wednesday afternoon.
He was questioned and released.
Champagnie indicated that the Cream of the Crop singer cooperated fully with the authorities.
“He went voluntarily to the police the moment he was made aware that they had an interest in speaking with him. Enquiries were made and he rendered full co-operation. He instructed his lawyers to contact the police in writing and also orally, and he was interviewed by the detectives on Wednesday,” said the senior counsel.
The police had expressed an interest in speaking to the Born Fighter deejay indicating that Jahshii could have information about the death of 45-year-old businessman Omar “Romie” Wright.
Reports are that Wright was killed on Shortwood Road about 10:40 pm on June 7 by armed men.
Allegations that Jahshii’s mother, who operates a wholesale business in the area, had an altercation with Wright during which he threw water in her face.
Following on Jahshii, whose real name is Mluleki Tafari Clarke, then reportedly argued with Wright about the incident.
Wright was gunned down hours later.
When grilled by detectives at Constant Spring Police Station the artiste declared that he had no involvement whatsoever in the activities surrounding the killing.
“He has indicated that his focus is on his career, and that was the case then, and more so now,” said his legal team.
Champagnie heaped praise on Jahshii, describing him as “a very impressive young man”.
“During the interview, he went further, suggesting that anyone who is in possession of information on the death of Omar Wright should come forward. He appealed for good sense to prevail and for members of the community not to take the law into their own hands, but to cooperate with the police and give all the assistance they can,” Champagnie said.
Tensions have been high in the Grant’s Pen community since the murder.
Commenting on social media posts, the artiste’s legal team said they were “not aware of any death threats” issued against their client.
Jahshii is booked for a show at Hope Gardens this weekend.
The fast-rising Jahshii has been making strides on the music scene since his breakthrough with hits like Born Fighter, Cream of The Crop, Life Lessons, Keep Up, and 25/8.
