Racing Out Of The ‘Box’
The ninth race on Sunday, June 25, 2023, produced one of the uncertain moments associated with horse racing, sparking instant debate and comparisons.
Foreigner Box Box trained by Owen Sharpe with Jerome Innis in the saddle, was cruising down the five straight course, en route to securing a first victory on local soil.
Then suddenly yards away from the winning post, Box Box had a mis-step with Innis becoming unsettled in the saddle.
Innis could not stay aboard, and eventually fell off.
Race goers at the track immediately started to evaluate whether or not Innis was in the saddle when passing the winning post, as one of the Rules of Racing clearly states that a jockey has to be in the saddle when going by the winning post for a placing to become official.
After checking the replay, it became obvious that Innis had just managed to stay on Box Box, and was duly declared the winner at odds of 33-1.
Photographer Joseph Wellington was at the track to capture the exciting moments of Box Box and her jockey.
