A policeman and a call centre manager are among four people detained following the seizure of a large cache of ammunition and cash after an incident in Jew Pen, Bog Walk, St Catherine, on Thursday night.

The cop, a constable who works in the St Catherine North Division, was detained after he was found in bushes by lawmen who went to investigate reports of explosions in the district.

It was reported that around 7:50 pm, the police responded to loud explosions sounding like gunshots when they saw a man, subsequently identified as the constable, hiding in bushes.

The constable reportedly told the police that he drove his car to the area with three of his friends to conduct a motor vehicle transaction.

He reported that he met up with a man, and while conversing along the roadway, he heard several loud explosions sounding like gunshots and ran off into the bushes. He said his friends jumped in his car and drove away.

The police said the constable was taken to the Bog Walk Police Station and made contact with his friends, who subsequently drove his car to the precinct.

The motor vehicle was searched, and one hundred 9mm cartridges were found in the glove compartment and a magazine containing ten 9mm cartridges retrieved from the armrest console.

The police said the constable was not the holder of a licensed firearm or a permit. More than one million dollars in cash was taken from the cop and one of his friends.

The Bog Walk police are investigating.
