Jamaica dominates draughts/checkers championship in USA
The Jamaican contingent left an indelible mark at the 54th Annual American Pool Checker Association (APCA) National Draughts/Checkers Championships held in Columbia, South Carolina, from July 10 – 12.
Led by the formidable International Grand Master (GMI) Wayne Reid, who claimed the prestigious Top Master title, three other Jamaicans also made their mark in the top masters’ division.
Sudian Suckram placed 4th while Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) members Sergeant Jason Wisdom secured 2nd, and Deputy Superintendent Jermaine Delattibudiere, landed a commendable 6th place.
The APCA National Championships is a highly regarded event in the world of draughts, attracting top-tier players from around the globe. It consists of five divisions ranging from the lower Blue Ribbon to the highest Top Masters, in which all four Jamaicans participated.
A total of 17 players competed in the top masters in a round-robin tournament, where each opponent played 16 players twice.
GMI Reid emerged as the deserving champion, capping 100 points and cementing his status as one of the best draughts players in the world.
His strategic moves and unparalleled brilliance throughout the tournament kept his opponents on edge, ultimately propelling him to the top of the leaderboard.
Suckram, the president of the Jamaica Draughts Association, says the success of team Jamaica at the championships is a testament to the nation’s dedication to the sport and underscores the commitment of the JDA in solidifying its status in the global community.
He adds: “The achievements of team Jamaica at this prestigious event has undoubtedly brought pride to the country of Jamaica and serves as our commitment to developing a nurturing environment for excellence through the mind sport of draught and an inspiration for aspiring players and the youth of Jamaica.”
