PORTLAND, Jamaica— Police seized 660 pounds of ganja during an operation at Guinep Tree Lane in Fairy Hill, Portland Thursday night.

Reports are that between 9:15pm and 11:30pm a joint police/military team, acting on information received, carried out snap raids in the community where bushes were searched for illegal drugs.

Whilst searching an area in the bushes, four white knitted bags and four black plastic bags were found hidden under sheets of zinc. A further search was carried out approximately 150 metres from the first location and another 25 knitted bags were found hidden under sheets of zinc at the root of a star apple tree.

The bags were examined and found to contain vegetable matter resembling ganja weighing 660 pounds.

No one was found at either location and the investigation continues.

Police superintendent in charge of Portland, Lloyd Darby urged citizens to make reports to the police if they have any information on those involved in the guns for drug trade, which he says continues to take place in the parish.

“The guns for drug trade continues in the parish of Portland. This latest seizure can be attributed to collaboration between the Jamaica Constabulary Force and Jamaica Defence Force intelligence. I want to make it known to the citizens of Portland, Jamaicans at home and in the Diaspora, that the security forces here in Portland will continue and will intensify the fight against this evil trade that brings guns into our country to kill the men, women and children. I want to implore residents anywhere in Jamaica that have information that can assist in the fight against this trade to call 311, 811 or any police or military person that you trust and play your part in keeping Jamaica safe,” Darby stated.
