Campbell first Jamaican to surpass 22.00-m mark in shot put
RAJINDRA Campbell became the first Jamaican man to surpass the 22.00-m mark in the shot put after he produced a stunning 22.22-m effort to win the event at Saturday’s Meet de Madrid — a World Athletics Continental Tour- Silver event — the joint third best throw of the season so far.
Campbell, the former Ferncourt High and Kingston College athlete, threw almost a full metre further than his previous best of 21.31m set in May in Tucson, Arizona, and broke the previous national record 21.96m set in 2017 by O’Dayne Richards.
In what must rank as one of the biggest surprises of Jamaican track and field in years Campbell, who solidified his place in the Jamaican team to the World Athletics Championships in Budapest next month, became the 35th man in history to throw at least 22.00m and is the 22nd best, ever.
Meanwhile, World Champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Olympic bronze medallist Megan Tapper were also winners at the meet while Julian Forte ran a season’s best in the 200m, days after his 100m season’s best.
Campbell who also broke the meet record 21.79m set in 2006 by American Christian Cantwell, surpassed the qualifying mark of 21.40m for the World Athletics Championships and is tied for third in the world with New Zealand’s Tom Walsh, only behind the American pair of Ryan Crouser- 23.56m and Jope Kovacs- 22.69m.
His mammoth heave came in the final round after he had dropped to third place following fouls in the fourth and fifth rounds. American Roger Steen was second with 21.33m and Chukwuebuka Cornell Enekwechi of Nigeria third with 21.30m.
Fraser-Pryce meanwhile won back-to-back 100m races, setting meet records in both after she clocked 10.83 seconds (-0.1m/s), two days after she ran her first 100m of the season in Luzern, Switzerland.
Fraser-Pryce, who had run 10.82 seconds on Thursday, failed to get off to her usual fast start but caught the field early and ran away to win easily ahead of Spain’s Jael Sakura Bestue in -10.10 seconds, who was just ahead of Jamaican Shasalee Forbes in -10.11 seconds.
In the process she broke the meeting record 10.92 seconds set in 2013 by American Barbara Pierre.
Tapper won the 100m hurdles A race in 12.69 seconds (0.3m/s), beating American Tonea Marshall’s- 12.74 seconds and Ebony Morrison of Liberia who ran a season’s best 12.81 seconds, while France’s Cyrena Samba-Mayla had won the B final in a season’s best 12.76 seconds (0.2m/s).
Forte, who ran 9.99 seconds to win the men’s 100m in Luzern on Thursday, lowered his season’s best in the 200m to 20.35 seconds (-0.9m/s), as he finished second behind Luxolo Adams of South Africa who won with 20.22 seconds and Ryan Zeze of France who was third with 20.52 seconds. Nigel Ellis placed fifth in 20.79 seconds.
Tyler Mason was fourth in the 110m hurdles in 13.41 seconds (0.3m/s), just ahead of Orlando Bennett- 13.43 seconds, both men finishing off a busy week when they raced no fewer than four times.
Switzerland’s Jason Joseph won with a personal best 13.10 seconds, just beating France’s Wilhelm Belocian’s- 13.20 seconds while Enrique Llopis of Spain was third in a season best 13.35 seconds.
Kimberly Williams was eighth in the women’s triple jump with a best of 13.71m (0.8m/s) after starting with two foul jumps.
