Racing News — Saturday, July 22, 2023

SELECT ME AN EASY WINNER

Three-year-old dark bay filly Select Me easily obliged as the favourite in a native-bred four-year-old and upwards (non-winners of two) and imported four-year-old and upward (maidens) at seven furlongs (1,400m).

Select Me raced among the backmarkers down the backstretch while stablemate Potential (Jerome Innis) headed the field ahead of Bigmanbiden (Phillip Parchment), Dancing With A Cat (Richard Henry), and Cotterwood Kathy (Oneil Mullings).

Select Me, owned and trained by Patrick Lynch, recovered strongly, going down into fourth place heading into the half-mile (800m) turn as Bigmanbiden took over ahead of Potential and Cotterwood Kathy.

Jungle Boogie (Matthew Bennett) surrounded runners and hit the front full of running in the stretch, looking the winner. However, inside the last furlong (200m) jockey Anthony Thomas asked his mount for a run, and Select Me reacted quickly with a surge, winning by a length and a half at the wire.

Jungle Boogie finished in second place, some 10½ lengths ahead of Potential who finished in third. The final time for the race was 1:31.2 (24.2 x 48.4 x 1:15.4).

MANOUSHE IN THE NICK OF TIME

Manoushe, trained by Richard Azan and ridden by Jawara Steadman, got up in the nick of time to beat rivals on the line in a native-bred three-year-old maiden call at 5½ furlongs (1,100m).

Manoushe settled in fourth place at the off, as Grey Commander (Daniel Thompson) seized the initiative going into the half-mile turn ahead of The Bees Knees (Bebeto Harvey) and Princess Akilah (Matthew Bennett).

Manoushe surrounded horses, getting closer to Grey Commander as they approached the distance, with The Bees Knees and Newland Links (Reyan Lewis) both making good runs.

Turning for home, Grey Commander continued to hold the lead, but with yards to go Steadman produced his mount with a strong effort and Manoushe got up for his first win.

Manoushe won by half-length in a time of 1:10.2 (24.2 x 48.1). The Bees Knees, stablemate of Manoushe, finished third.

POWEROFHERHIGHNESS IN ONE SHAKE

Powerofherhighness made all the running to win a Maiden Special Weight contest for native-bred three-year-olds travelling a mile (1,600m).

Powerofherhighness, trained and owned by Oral Hayden and ridden by Anthony Thomas, left her starting barrier in good order, grabbing the lead. Down the backstretch Powerofherhighness maintained her lead ahead of Richie Rich (Reyan Lewis), Crucial Alexxya (Shamaree Muir), and Joblane (Jawara Steadman) before picking up the tempo heading into the half-mile turn.

Powerofherhighness accelerated in the home stretch, outbattling Richie Rich to the wire, winning by three- quarters of a length. Mr Senator (Tevin Foster) finished third, with the final time for the race being 1:43.4 (25.2 x 48.4 x 1:15.3).

EQUIPMENT CHANGE AND BURLAP IS A WINNER

Burlap, running with the tongue tie on for the first time in his eight-race career, came from behind runners to win a native-three-year-old (non-winners of two) and imported three-year-old and upwards (maiden) over five furlongs (1,000m) round.

With Allen Maragh in the saddle for trainer Richard Azan, Burlap raced among the backmarkers after the gates opened as Running Glory (Reyan Lewis) led the field into the half-mile turn ahead of Joy Is Golden (Jordan Barrett) and City Hawk (Tevin Foster).

Burlap made some progress racing on the inside before changing course to the outside of horses, while still trailing the leaders. Joy is Golden had the lead in deep stretch and looked to be the winner as the furlong pole approached, but Maragh produced Burlap with a late effort and the bay colt surged to his first win.

Burlap won by a length ahead of Joy Is Golden and California Gold (Ramon Nepare) in a time of 1:03.0 (23.4 x 48.0).
