Silver Cat pleased with Nicki Minaj ‘forward’
Veteran dancehall artiste Silver Cat is pleased with the recognition that rapper Nicki Minaj gave to his 29-year-old hit Fowl Affair.
Earlier last week, Minaj, while promoting her upcoming album Pink Friday 2, shared two Instagram posts to her followers. One had the first line of the lyrics to Fowl Affair, “Mi have 2 fowl a mi yard, one a cock and one a hen,” while in the other post, she shared the release date for the upcoming album.
The Jamaica Observer caught up with Silver Cat on Friday at his recording studio Silver Sonic Recording Studio in Clarendon.
“I am feeling good and overwhelmed, knowing that a major international artiste recognises Silver Cat. It’s a joy, thanks for the endorsement,” he told the Observer.
He said his 23-year-old daughter Chevelle was the one who made him aware of the post.
“My daughter called me and informed me. Afterwards, my phone was ringing off the hook with people calling from all over, Jamaica, America and England, just telling me about what they saw on social media,” said Silver Cat.
Fowl Affair was produced by Shocking Vibes Productions and featured on the popular Corduroy rhythm, which also had Beenie Man’s World Dance hit single among other songs.
The song topped the RJR Top 40 chart in the summer of 1994, spending four weeks at #1.
Silver Cat said the song’s success was a life-changer for him.
“Before that I was doing woodwork, making furniture, and then I went into doing some barbering. I went to Penthouse with a friend and I recorded a few songs that didn’t make any impact. I later did Fowl Affair and it was a hit. It changed my life. I was able to move from out of the ghetto and improve my life in a major way,’ Silver Cat shared.
His father, the late Phillip McDonald, wasn’t as supportive of his move into music initially, especially since he taught his son the ropes in woodwork, However, his mother was supportive from the start, he said.
Born Neil McDonald, Silver Cat is originally from the district of Pennant in Clarendon.
He shared how the idea for Fowl Affair came about.
“My mother had issues with fowls coming over to her yard because they were creating havoc and raiding the kitchen. Me and my friend Lallabella decided to write lyrics and came up with the song. We came up with the idea metaphoric style,” Silver Cat disclosed.
He said he became aware of the song being a hit after hearing it blaring inside taxis that drove past his house.
“Is the taxi dem weh did a drive past mi house mi hear a play the song, that’s how me know it was a hit. I was very overwhelmed. It elevated mi life. Music did a lot for me,” he shared.
Silver Cat followed up with the songs Chronic, Show Me Your Motion, Naw Go Bow, Lose Him Gal, and Get too Bright.
Today, he has been guiding new talent and producing up-and-coming acts in Clarendon through his Silver Sonic Recording Studio.
He recently released new music, with Clean, being his latest single.
