#WorldChamps2023: Three Jamaicans to contest 100m hurdles semis
Jamaica’s Megan Tapper, Danielle Williams and Ackera Nugent have advanced to the next round of the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships on Tuesday.
Olympic bronze medallist Megan Tapper went to battle with world record holder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria in heat five and finished second in a time of 12.51. Amusan ran 12.49 for the top spot, while Australia’s Michelle Jenneke (12.71) and Natalia Christofi of Cyprus (12.90) finished third and fourth, respectively.
In heat one, NCAA Outdoors champion Ackera Nugent held off her collegiate rival Masai Russell of America to claim the top spot. However, both athletes registered a time of 12.60 seconds. Ireland’s Sarah Lavin (12.69) and France’s Cyréna Samba-Mayela (12.71) are the other qualifiers from this heat.
Former world champion Danielle Williams clattered the 10th hurdle but managed to secure third place, qualifying in a season’s best (SB) time of 12.51 in heat three.
Former world record holder Kendra Harrison of America ran a blistering 12.24 to win, running one of the fastest times in history. Bahamian Devynne Charlton set a new national record of 12.44 for second while Great Britain’s Cindy Sember produced a SB of 12.83 for fourth.
The semi-final of the women’s 100m hurdles will take place on Wednesday at 1:40 pm Jamaica time.
