If you’re a Jamaican in New York, then there was no other place to be Saturday last than the New York Hilton Midtown, for the Jamaica Independence Gala.

The event, conceptualised by Alsion Roach Wilson, consul general of Jamaica, New York, fuelled by Jamaica’s Promise Foundation, and hosted with aplomb by attorney-at-law and media personality Khadine “Miss Kitty” Hylton, honoured both Jamaican-born and-blooded individuals who continue to keep the black, green and gold flag flying high. Those making the cut this year were Marc Jerome, Marlon Lindsay, Assistant Chief of Police Ruel Stephenson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Orville “Shaggy” Burrell, Stephen Facey, and Dr Rosemarie Ingleton.

Roach-Wilson shared with Page 2 that the proceeds from the Independence Gala will cover 30 tertiary education scholarships, a dialysis machine (which will be presented to the Ministry of Health) and will further fund involvement in community activities.

Beauty & Grace – Rose Skin MD founder, dermatologist Dr Rose Ingleton (right) was all smiles as she accepted her award for Woman of Excellence in Medicine and Business from Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Senator Kamina Johnson Smith..

Lights, Camera, Action! – Jamaican-blooded actress and TV host Khadeen Ellis (right) presented Emmy Award-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, with the award for Outstanding Performance in Film and Television.

Rock Solid – Repping The Rock at the Jamaica Independence Gala were (from left): Prime Minister Andrew Holness; Kamina Johnson Smith, minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade; and United States Ambassador to Jamaica Noah Nicholas “Nick” Perry. .

Mr Boombastic – Orville “Shaggy” Burrell accepted his award for International Cultural Icon in Reggae Music and Philanthropy from Shashana Goulbourne, head of accounting at the Consulate General of Jamaica, New York..

Kodak Moment – In high spirits were Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Emmy Award-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph.

Law & Order – Assistant Chief of Police Ruel Stephenson (right) was all smiles as he received a congratulatory handshake from Prime Minister Andrew Holness. Stephenson was the recipient of the Jamaica Independence Award for Leadership in Law and Enforcement and Community Development.

Well-Deserved – Prime Minister Andrew Holness (left) presented president of Monroe College Marc Jerome with the award for Education Excellence and the Development of Jamaica.

Triple Threat – The evening’s compere Khadine “Miss Kitty” Hylton dazzled alongside Ambassador to the UN Brian Wallace (left), and King’s Counsel Ian Wilkinson.

Star Power – Alsion Roach Wilson (left), Jamaica consul general to New York; and Jamaican-blooded actress and TV host Khadeen Ellis, both stepped out in green bejewelled ensembles for the gala.
