PNP rep bats for reopening of Kintyre postal agency
RESIDENTS of Kintyre in St Andrew have been without the use of the postal agency in the community for more than a year now, and according to Vivienne Brown-Bond, People’s National Party (PNP) councillor candidate for the Kintyre Division, the elderly people are “suffering”.
“Somebody needs to let us know what is happening. Why can’t we be told what is happening? We can’t be in the dark like that. The place can’t just lock up like that,” Brown-Bond said.
She explained that since the closure the elderly and people who used to depend on the post office have been terribly inconvenienced.
“The postal agency is right here on Joseph Road and it has been closed for some time now, and people are asking for assistance. It is difficult for them to go down to Mona Post Office. You feel how hot the sun is? Some of them don’t even have the money to go down to Mona.
“They have their pension that they have to collect and sometimes when they go down there they don’t get through. Sometimes they have to make multiple trips. Sometimes they down there and can’t come back up because they spent their last money. We want to know what is happening with the post office; the elders are still suffering. I want some action,” she said.
The Jamaica Observer was told that the woman who worked at the postal agency in Kintyre resigned and moved on to greener pastures.
“They were paying her $20,000 per month. She stopped working, and since she resigned they haven’t gotten anybody to work. She was considering to stay but she couldn’t and got a different job – she served the community for 13 years. The post office closed from April 2022 and it is just there locked up. The elderly need the services there.
“Everyday they call her and tell her how they miss her. I don’t know if it is a case where nobody wants to work there,” said a close relative of the former worker.
One man assumed money could be the issue why no one has been hired since April last year.
“The girl gone almost two years now and they still can’t get anybody to put there. What is the problem? Something is wrong,” he said.
A representative at Mona Post Office said that some postal agencies are being closed down and that Kintyre could be one of those affected in that way.
The Observer also spoke to senior officials of Jamaica Post on Monday and was told that checks would be made and an update would be given at a later date.
