Sandals, SDC fete Steer Town senior citizens

DEMONSTRATING the true essence of community solidarity, Sandals Dunn’s River, Sandals Royal Plantation, and the Social Development Commission (SDC) feted over 80 senior citizens at Steer Town Academy recently.

Accompanied by several of her elderly friends, Paula Dawkins, a joyful resident of Steer Town, commented that: “People don’t often care for the elderly so this joint effort was a shining example of compassion and unity within the community.”

The event featured a range of activities designed to pamper and honour the senior members of the community. Attendees were treated to an array of services including health checks by dedicated nurses who conducted blood sugar and blood pressure tests — ensuring the well-being of every participant — as well as spa treatments, grooming, entertainment, lunch and refreshments.

Antoinette Ledgister-Hall, community coordinator of the Social Development Commission for that section of the St Ann region, wholeheartedly conveyed the organisation’s resolute commitment. She remarked that, “Our dedication to our cherished elders goes beyond obligation; it’s a fervent passion within us. The elderly treat event underscores our devotion, fostering an environment of happiness and gratitude. With this endeavour our goal is to ensure that our seniors not only receive rightful care but also bask in the glow of celebration for their remarkable contributions.”

The care also went beyond medical assistance. Compassionate team members from both Sandals properties provided gentle hand and body massages, while relaxing hair-combing sessions added a revitalising touch to the elderly participants. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and joy as the community’s senior members relished a dedicated day of relaxation and recognition.

Arnold Nugent, general manager at Sandals Royal Plantation, explained that, “Their stories offer a special perspective to see how our society has changed, the obstacles they conquered, and the lasting values. Each shared moment builds a bridge to our past, keeps us in the present, and guides us toward a wiser future. Listening to our elders isn’t just being respectful — it’s an investment in our personal development and enriching our shared wisdom.”

Among the esteemed guests were a remarkable couple who celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on Saturday, August 19, 2023. Their presence lent an even greater significance to the occasion, symbolising enduring love and the strength of long-standing relationships. The couple shared a touching dance with fellow attendees, encapsulating their timeless bond. To mark their union they were presented with a bottle of non-alcoholic wine, a symbolic gesture of celebration and togetherness.

Shaneika Bolton, sales executive at Sandals Dunn’s River, shared that, “Being a part of the Sandals team and contributing to the well-being of our seniors was truly rewarding. Seeing their smiles and hearing their stories reminded me of how much a small act of kindness can mean. These seniors have given a lot to our community, and it’s an honour to give back. From hand massages to conversations, I felt a strong connection with their wisdom. This experience highlighted how important it is to connect with different generations and how compassion can make a real difference. We left the event with a better grasp of how much our elders influence our lives and a fresh commitment to treating them with the same care and respect they’ve given us.”

Deryk Meany, general manager of Sandals Dunn’s River, expressed that, “Our elders embody wisdom, history, and experiences that have built our society’s core. Every wrinkle holds a story, each laugh carries memories, and each moment with them is a chance to celebrate their priceless contributions. Initiatives like the elderly treat offer not just pampering and joy, but also uphold the values of respect, compassion, and community unity.”

Tajae Walker, the environment, health, and safety manager at Sandals Royal Plantation, added, “The event meant more than just providing care [as] it took me back to cherished moments with my own grandparents; their stories and love came flooding back to me. This occasion served as a reminder of their absence and a chance to honour their memory. Witnessing the smiles of the seniors we cared for brought a sense of returning the same warmth and joy my grandparents had given me. I feel grateful to have participated in an event that allowed me to extend my care to others while paying tribute to the love I once received from my grandparents.”

As the day drew to a close the echoes of laughter, music, and gratitude resonated, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all in attendance. The event exemplified a remarkable philanthropic endeavour, highlighting the deep-seated care and respect the community holds for its elders. It showcased the exceptional collaborative spirit of Sandals Dunn’s River, Sandals Royal Plantation, and the Social Development Commission. This initiative not only brought joy to the elderly members of the community but also underscored the importance of fostering intergenerational connections and honouring the wisdom of the past.
