After Denham Town…
The last edition of No Bar took place in Denham Town, attracting a strong turnout at Denham Town Park in that west Kingston community.
Sound system selectors and artistes from the area performed at the event’s second staging this year.
No Bar founder and chief organiser, Ricardo “Bozza B” Ellis, told the Jamaica Observer that his party gets bigger as word spreads.
“It was like a movie, the patrons were like, ‘Yow, dis a di maddest event in West Kingston,’ ” said Ellis, who was born and raised in Denham Town.
Selectors Sting Dawg, Shukkle Bus, DJ Mac and DJ Baba, Fire Bigz and Wessy Wessy shared the stage with several fledgling artistes including Jquan, Arkus, Virus, and Zizo.
Ellis has high hopes for No Bar, which was first held in 2017. With sponsorship, he believes it can reach the heights of Passa Passa, the 1990s west Kingston event that sparked the weekly dance craze throughout Kingston.
Passa Passa, which was first held in 2003, drew fans of dancehall culture to a region usually associated with gang violence.
At No Bar, patrons are allowed with their drinks, but are required to pay an entry fee.
Its third and final staging for 2023 will be held on Boxing Day.
