DaCosta, Lewis combine to dominate Caymanas Park proceedings
ON Saturday’s 10-race programme at Caymanas Park champion trainer Jason DaCosta and title-chasing jockey Reyan Lewis dominated the action and shared the stage, with large grins on their faces.
DaCosta, well on course to win his second-consecutive trainers’ title, saddled four winners while Lewis, who was atop all four of DaCosta’s winners, was victorious in yet another race to finish the day with five winners.
Lewis is hunting his first jockeys’ title and sits in pole position on 82 winners — 16 wins ahead of champion Dane Dawkins on 66 winners.
The formidable pair had teamed up with three-year-old, American-bred, bay colt Is That A Fact to win the $1.4-million Poorlittlerichgirl Trophy feature race over seven furlongs (1,400m), to highlight the day’s proceedings.
Is That A Fact never looked back after the quick-footed foreigner was expertly coupled up on the inside rails to take up the running approaching the six-furlong (1,200m) marker. Going into the half-mile (800m) Is That A Fact was in easy lead, followed by Jordon Reign’s (Tevin Foster), Blue Vinyl (Javaniel Patterson), and Perfect Brew (Dane Dawkins). But a titanic struggle appeared to be coming as Blue Vinyl and Perfect Brew arrived with their challenges in deep stretch.
It was then left to Blue Vinyl to try and pass the leader as Perfect Brew’s gallop slowed down at the furlong pole (200m), but in the end Is That A Fact hung on to win the Open Allowance race by a little head. Perfect Brew finished third as the final time was recorded at 1:25.2 (24.2 x 47.0 x 1:11.1).
DaCosta and Lewis’s other winners were Phenomenal One in the first race, Wayne’s Princess in the seventh race, and Luksol in the 10th and final event.
Lewis had won aboard the Peter-John Parsard-trained Geolithic in the second race to complete his five-timer.
Racing continues next weekend with races on Saturday and Sunday.
