D’Cup second round pairings completed
KINGSTON, Jamaica — William Knibb Memorial and Christiana High School completed the list of automatic qualifiers in the second round pairings of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition after Tuesday’s round of rescheduled matches.
Koran Henriques scored a hat-trick for William Knibb who came from a goal down to beat Browns Town High 5-1. Playing with 10 players from the 14th minute, William Knibb took the third automatic place from Zone C with 18 points, behind Cedric Titus (25 points) and Ocho Rios High (20 points).
Christiana High beat Alphansus Davis High 2-0 to finish second in Zone G with 18 points ahead of Knox College who finished with 17 points after being awarded full points against Bellefield High.
The other schools that had already secured their spots were Cornwall College, Irwin High, Rusea’s High, Frome Technical, Cedric Titus High, Ocho Rios, Mannings School, Black River, St Elizabeth Technical, BB Coke, Manchester High, Belair High, Mile Gully High, Clarendon College, Edwin Allen, Tacky High, St Mary High, Dinthill Technical, McGrath High, Paul Bogle High, Morant Bay High, Glenmuir High, Central High, Garvey Maceo High, Vere Technical, Happy Grove High and Port Antonio High.
The best third-placed teams are deCarteret College from Pool 1 and Munro College and Horace Clarke High from Pool 2.
On Tuesday, Brown’s Town took the lead in the 14th minute when Tayeshaun Spence scored from the penalty spot. William Knibb Memorial’s Seron Williams was also sent off for an infraction in the penalty box, but despite playing with just 10 players, the home team hit back with a double from Henriques, in the 29th and 43rd minutes, completing his hat-trick early in the second half, while Amari-Christopher Reid and Theonjae Bennett added goals.
Malique Hewitt scored a hat-trick for Ocho Rios in their 4-1 win over Cedric Titus at Drax Hall in another Zone C game between two teams that had qualified earlier. Meanwhile, Dinthill Technical became the fourth school to complete their first round schedule with a perfect record after they were awarded points from their game against Enid Bennett High.
Manchester High won all 10 games in Zone F, defending champions Clarendon College won all eight games in Zone H and Happy Grove High won all six games in Zone N.
