William Knibb hope for redemption in d’Cup play-off

TRELAWNY, Jamaica— William Knibb Memorial will have a chance of redemption on Tuesday when they host Brown’s Town High in an ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup Zone C play-off game in Martha Brae, Trelawny, for one of the five remaining spots in the second round.

The game is set to start at 3:00pm.

The final five qualifiers for the second round are expected to be decided after the playing of 12 rescheduled games on Tuesday. The final five— the third place team from Zone C, second place from Zone G as well as the three best third place teams— will join the 27 schools that have already booked their places.

William Knibb’s chances of qualifying for the second round took a massive blow after they were docked points from their first round win over Cedric Titus High but they have since responded with a win over York Castle High to qualify for the play-offs then beat Ocho Rios High.

Cedric Titus and Ocho Rios High, who will also meet at Drax Hall Tuesday, have qualified for the second round.

William Knibb are marginally ahead on goal-difference and a draw would be enough to see them through but Brown’s Town who had won the first round game between the teams will be confident they can repeat.

Three teams are in contention to join Zone G winners Mile Gully High in the second round, led by second placed Christiana High, on 15 points, who will face last placed Alphansus Davis.

Christiana High must win if they are to secure their place, as third placed Knox College on 14 points, faces fourth placed Bellefield High who are on 12 points.

Knox College have not won a game on the field in their last six outings since winning their first three games and Bellefield High who have a slim chance of advancing, could be competitive today.

Meanwhile, the teams that have already secured their places in the second round are: Cornwall College, Irwin High, Rusea’s High, Frome Technical, Cedric Titus High, Ocho Rios, Manning”s School, Black River, St Elizabeth Technical, BB Coke, Manchester High, Belair High, Mile Gully High, Clarendon College, Edwin Allen, Tacky High, St Mary High, Dinthill Technical, McGrath High, Paul Bogle High, Morant Bay High, Glenmuir High, Central High, Garvey Maceo High, Vere Technical, Happy Grove High and Port Antonio High.

So far, the best third placed teams are deCarteret College from Pool 1 and Munro College and Horace Clarke High from Pool 2.
