Two marlins released on first day of fishing tourney
PORT ANTONIO, Portland — Defending champion Integrity and 2 Contankerous released a marlin each on the first day of the 60th Sir Henry Morgan Port Antonio International Blue Marlin Tournament which got underway on Thursday morning at the Ole Marina here.
Custos of Portland Lincoln Thaxter represented the Governor General Patrick Allen as he declared the tournament open after reading the governor general’s message.
In declaring the tournament open, Allen’s message read: “Welcome all to the 60th Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament, the diamond celebration in the pristine waters of Port Antonio. I am pleased to see how the tournament has grown and has become a staple on the calendar for fisher folk across the world.
“The history of this tournament is one of tradition, excellence and dedication from its supporters and of the board of directors. For all six decades it has represented a symbol of sport and community in Portland for everyone to enjoy. This tournament is no more than an acclaimed competition it is a celebration of the beauty of God and the world that we are able to witness with the amazing catches to be uncovered,” the message said.
There are 15 boats registered, but only 14 went out on the first day, including two boats from Haiti. There are 56 anglers taking part.
