Chinese beer worker caught on video urinating into tank – reports
A worker at a top Chinese beer maker was reportedly caught on video urinating into a tank of beer ingredients.
According to media reports, the video, which showed a warehouse worker of Tsingtao Brewery in blue overalls and a yellow hat climbing into a container and urinating on the contents, has racked up tens of thousands of views on China’s microblogging site Weibo since appearing last Thursday. It has triggered food safety concerns among citizens.
Tsingtao Brewery, China’s second-largest beer producer, released a statement saying it was looking into the video, which was filmed at its plant in the city of Pingdu.
“Our company attaches high importance to the relevant video that emerged from Tsingtao Brewery No 3 on October 19,” the beer manufacturer stated, reported the South China Morning Post. “We reported the incident to the police at the earliest opportunity, and public security agencies are involved in the investigation.”
The statement from Tsingtao assured its customers that the batch of ingredients from its facility in Pingdu had been sealed.
“Our company continues to increase management efforts to ensure product quality, and welcomes consumer supervision,” the manufacturer stated.
The Pingdu Market Authority said Friday that it swiftly put together a team and conducted an investigation at the site featured in the viral video.
Both the man who appeared to urinate in the video and the person who filmed it have been detained by the police, reported the state-owned outlet National Business Daily.
The outlet also said, citing an internal source familiar with the matter, that the duo were not direct employees of Tsingtao but rather external hires.
Tsingtao is one of China’s most popular beer brands and the country’s biggest exporter of brew.
