NFL: No Fun League or Not For Laughs
Strolling into the official halfway point of the 2023/24 National Football League (NFL) regular season, it is easy to see why the league has earned the moniker of “No Fun League”, while others have deemed it, “Not For Laughs”. Of course, the Carolina Panthers will disagree — at least for one week — as they managed to carve out their first victory of the season last weekend against the Houston Texans, winning 15-13.
On more sobering issues from Week 8: The high-flying Philadelphia Eagles had to fight out of an early hole to overcome the challenge of the Washington Commanders, the offence of the Dallas Cowboys finally showed its face in a matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, the San Francisco 49ers continued their slide after taking on the Cincinnati Bengals, and the offence of the reigning champions, Kansas City Chiefs didn’t show up for the mile-high contest against the Denver Broncos. While the head-scratching of last weekend’s headlines continues, the mouthwatering line-up for Week 9 is possibly the most appealing so far this season.
Sunday’s games kick off in Germany where, for the first time in NFL history, the city of Frankfurt will be hosting an NFL regular-season game, and what a game it is expected to be. The Chiefs (6-2) enter the weekend as JustBet ‘home’ favourites against the Miami Dolphins (6-2) early Sunday morning, for a game that must have been circled on Tyreek Hill’s calendar.
Hill, after playing six seasons in Kansas City, will be facing the Chiefs for the first time since he was traded to Miami in March 2022 and, having already amassed 1,014 receiving yards — making him the first player in the Super Bowl era to reach 1,000 yards in just eight games — he needs no additional incentive to stay on his record-breaking stride.
Kansas City lost the opening game of the season and were merrily skipping through their schedule until Denver hit the brake pedal last Sunday, winning 24-9. In the previous 12 meetings, Chiefs’ quarterback (QB) Patrick Mahomes was victorious against the Broncos but couldn’t find the end zone last weekend, and Kansas City was completely kept off the scoreboard in the second half. Chances are, there will be a different storyline in Germany.
Hill has been explosive for the Dolphins this year and he is on pace for 2,154 yards this season — no player in NFL history has ever even finished a season with 2,000 receiving yards — but the Chiefs know him better than anyone else, and Kansas City’s defence is pretty good this year. Heading into the weekend, the Chiefs are only giving up 15.1 points per game and 176.1 receiving yards this year, which both rank second in the NFL. Additionally, Miami’s QB Tua Tagovailoa can anticipate lots of pressure as the Chiefs have 28 sacks already this season, tied for second-most in the NFL.
Truth be told, the Dolphins have played only two teams with winning records this year — the Buffalo Bills and the Eagles — and they lost both games by an average of 21 points. The Miami offence has been the more explosive of the two, but Mahomes’ loss last week may be to the Dolphins’ detriment as he has won eight straight games coming off a loss, which is the longest streak of any QB in the NFL. This game is officially a toss-up and if there was ever a matchup that shouldn’t be missed, this is it.
The Eagles survived the onslaught of the Commanders last weekend for a 38-31 win, and established the best record in the league, while the Cowboys were the toast of the town with an impressive balance of offence and defence, that saw them outmuscling the Rams 43-20.
This Sunday afternoon, Philadelphia (7-1) invites Dallas (5-2) into Lincoln Financial Field for a National Football Conference (NFC) East, top-of-the-table clash. The opposing QBs for this encounter — Jalen Hurts and Dak Prescott — have only clashed once, back in 2021, and the Cowboys came away with a 41-21 win.
Prescott threw for three touchdowns in the game and finished with a QB rating of 143.3. In fact, the Eagles seem to bring out the best in Prescott, as in his last three starts against the Eagles, not only have the Cowboys gone 3-0, but they averaged 44 points per game.
In those three wins, the Dallas QB threw 11 touchdowns, with just one interception. On the part of the Eagles, QB Hurts can inflict damage with both his arm and legs, and with talented targets like AJ Brown and Devonta Smith, Dallas’ cornerbacks Stephon Gilmore and DaRon Bland will have their hands full. Incidentally, Brown set an NFL record in the win last week by becoming the first receiver in league history to record at least 125 receiving yards in six straight games.
This game is in Philadelphia and JustBet lists the home team as solid favourites, but it’s hard to ignore history. The upset is a great possibility here, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Dallas pinched a win.
The 49ers, after starting the season 5-0 and having many ready to crown them champions of the NFC, have lost three in a row and will thankfully be on a bye in Week 9, but their most recent conquerors will be on primetime this Sunday night. The Cincinnati Bengals (4-3) will welcome the Buffalo Bills (5-3) into Ohio for a revisit to the scene of January’s emotional incident, when Damar Hamlin suffered a horrific, heart-stopping (literally) injury.
The home team is favoured by JustBet and with good reason, as Buffalo is 1-3 on the road this season and QB Josh Allen has thrown six interceptions and lost two fumbles on those travels. In the seven games the Bengals have played, they have forced multiple turnovers in five of those. In total, the Cincinnati defence has racked up 13 turnovers for the season — tied for the fifth-highest total so far — and intercepted 10 passes, ranked third in the league.
Additionally, Cincinnati’s QB Joe Burrow, who was the top-paid player coming into the season, is finally looking like his old self. Following a right-calf injury in July, Burrow had been limited over the first four games of the season, resulting in just three touchdowns, which was the lowest total in the NFL over that span.
However, Burrow’s movement has significantly improved over the last two games, defeating teams with winning records — the Seattle Seahawks and 49ers — and rushed for 43 yards in the win last week over San Francisco. This will not be one for the faint of heart, as the Bengals are surging and the Bills plan on circling the wagons — a very good reason to stay up late.
