PERTH, Australia (CMC) – Hayley Matthews’s poor form continued to reflect that of her Melbourne Renegades, the West Indies captain failing again in a seven-wicket defeat to Sydney Sixers here Sunday.

Renegades could only muster 104 all out with a ball to spare at the WACA Ground and Sixers chased down the small total with ease, getting over the line with nearly five overs to spare.

The 25-year-old Matthews scored heavily for West Indies in last month’s Twenty20 series against Australia but has failed to recapture that form in the Women’s Big Bash League.

On Sunday, she managed only five before becoming the first casualty of the innings in the second over, one of two wickets for new ball left-arm spinner Lindsey Smith (2-17).

Matthews now has 99 runs from seven outings in the tournament, averaging 14.

The defeat for Renegades was their sixth in seven games this season, leaving them bottom of the eighth-team standings on two points.

Sent in, Renegades slumped to 30 for five in the eighth over before Indian star Harmanpreet Kaur, who top-scored with 47 from 40 balls with seven fours, put on 27 for the sixth wicket with Georgia Wareham (10) and 33 for the seventh with wicketkeeper Josephine Dooley (19).

In reply, Sixers found themselves in trouble at nine for two after seamer Sarah Kennedy struck twice in the second over, but Captain Ellyse Perry rescued the chase with an unbeaten 44 from 39 balls with half-dozen fours and a six.

More importantly, she put on 62 for the third wicket with Erin Burns (32) and a further 36 in an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership with South African Chloe Tryon, who lashed a 13-ball unbeaten 26.

Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat top the standings with 10 points each.
