Azaria Wray: Committed to finishing the race
AZARIA Wray, a first class honours graduand of the College of Health Sciences, University of Technology, Jamaica, enthusiastically embraced her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and Nutrition as she felt that the field was a natural fit after researching various programmes after leaving high school.
The high achiever, who will proudly walk across the stage on November 17 to receive her degree, shared that she discovered that her subjects aligned seamlessly with the dietetics and nutrition programme and would further enhance her passion for a healthy diet and lifestyle while also creating numerous opportunities for her in the future. Her passion and successful completion of her studies have already begun to bear the fruits of opportunity and has given her the confidence to function effectively in her current job as a research assistant on one of the projects of the Caribbean Institute of Health Research.
As a self-proclaimed “foodie”, Wray notes that this passion made her degree programme even more fulfilling but acknowledged that the road to completion was not without challenges. She recounts that the transition to university life, balancing academic life and leisure, and adjusting to her new-found autonomy and increased responsibility, which included keeping track of tests and assignments without reminders from teachers, was challenging. Additionally, she notes the shift from face-to-face to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic required a different approach as some modules were more difficult than others, requiring extra time and effort to comprehend.
Despite the challenges, Wray was determined to see her degree to completion.
“As the finish line got closer, it was easier to visualise myself being rewarded with the fruits of my labour,” she beamed, adding that although the road was rocky, she had a genuine passion for her studies and knowing that she would be able to use the knowledge and training acquired to help people.
The high achiever expressed gratitude for the encouragement of loved ones and support from friends, which played a significant role in her success. She is also grateful to lecturers for their unwavering support, recalling a particular occasion when she had a problem with answering a question for a chemistry lab.
“When I visited the lecturer at her office, she was happy to get out a paper and pen to explain the concept to me,” she expressed with appreciation.
Sharing one of her most memorable moments, the proud Wray recounted a class trip to Flagstaff in the Maroon Town of St James during which students not only focused on their coursework but also had the chance to explore the local flora and fauna and learn about the cultural traditions of the Maroons.
“It was a wonderful bonding experience for us as a class. From the games we played while travelling the breathtaking view of the mountains and greenery to hearing about the fascinating history of the area, it was a very memorable trip,” she shared.
In encouraging future graduates, she offers three tips for success. Firstly, she stressed the importance of being organised and taking responsibility for staying on top of classes and assignments. She recommended using apps to help manage tasks and avoid falling behind. Secondly, she advised students to thoroughly read their syllabi to gain a clear understanding of the module and its expectations. Lastly, she encourages students to never hesitate in seeking help when needed.
“I’m going to take things one day at a time and keep my mind open to new experiences. The grace of God has taken me this far and I’m looking forward to whatever He has in store for me in the future,” she said.
