Five-time champions Wolmer’s through to last eight of Walker Cup
Wolmer’s Boys’ Captain Benjamin Griffiths says crashing out of the Manning Cup gave the school further motivation to prove their worth in the ISSA Walker Cup as they whipped Kingston Technical High School (KT) 4-0 in first-round action on Wednesday on the campus of Mico University College.
The five-time champions were dominant from start to finish with two goals either side of half-time.
Addon Daye scored two well-taken goals in the 19th minute and 25th minute, respectively.
Alex Wright made it three in the 49th minute before Nathaniel Brooks laid further misery on KT with a powerful free kick in the 67th minute.
Griffiths was happy his team responded well after their second-round exit to St Catherine in the Manning Cup.
“It was very important because losing those two games took a toll on us. It was up to me and the coaches to get everyone together to try build up back the spirit so we can come again today,” he said.
“[The performance] was good, we had times where we had small lapses but we talked to each other and got through it nice and easy. We continued to pass the ball around and move it.”
Kingston Technical’s season officially ended with the defeat, but Head Coach Francis Murray was able to see the positives.
“We would have loved to do better but considering that we were understaffed and under-resourced, I think we did very well for the season. To get out of the zone that we got out of and finished as the best-third place with the defending champions Jamaica College and the defending Walker Cup champions Tivoli was good. A little disciplined crept in at a point or two but we have enough to build on going forward,” he said.
In other first-round games, Excelsior beat St Jago 3-1, Haile Selassie clipped Eltham 2-1 and Jonathan Grant also edged Campion 2-1.
The quarter-finals set for next Thursday will see defending Manning Cup champions Jamaica College take on Jonathan Grant, STATHS battle Haile Selassie, Tivoli face Excelsior and St Catherine play Wolmer’s in a repeat of their Manning Cup second-round encounter.
