Heights take over lead in Sandals Major League
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Heights FC took over sole leadership of the St James Football Association/Sandals Resorts International Major League after beating former champions Wadada United FC 4-1 in their rescheduled game at the UDC field on Monday.
Garth Johnson, who was a second-half substitute, scored two goals to lead Heights FC to back-to-back wins and on to six points at the top of the tables.
Wadada United were given a rude welcome back to the league after playing in the Jamaica Football Federation Tier II (Championships) for the past two seasons.
Meanwhile, Montego Bay Boys Club were awarded three points and a 3-0 margin for their game against Cambridge United that was not played on Saturday, November 4, after the home team failed to provide adequate security.
It was the first ‘win’ for Boys Club who lost 13 straight games going back to last season when they failed to register a point through the entire season.
On Monday, all five goals came in the second half with Michael Thompson getting the first in the 52nd minute when he fired past Wadada United’s goalkeeper Daniel Meeks from almost on the goal line, shooting into the for upper right corner of the goal.
Two minutes after he missed high from about 12 yards, Johnson scored a brilliant goal, beating Meeks from from about 25 yards with a ferocious shot in the 66th minute.
Johnson added his second and his team’s third in the 72nd minute when he got the better of a tiring Wadada United defence before Nevaldo Christie pulled a goal back for Wadada United when he slotted home from close range in the 73rd minute.
Jevar Maxwell, however, restored Heights FC’s three goals margin when he scored his league-leading third goal in the 78th minute.
