NDTC hosts benefit for musicologist Marjorie Whylie
National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC) mounts the fourth instalment of ‘The Music of the NDTC’, a celebration of cultural richness and artistic excellence.
Scheduled for Wednesday, December 6, at Little Theatre, showtime 7:00 pm.
This events holds special significance as all proceeds will contribute to supporting the esteemed Musical Director Marjorie Whylie.
A dedicated pillar of the company, Whylie currently faces health challenges.
The evening promises a captivating showcase of the NDTC’s musical journey, featuring renowned suites from former Musical Director Ewan Simpson and the newly appointed successor, Dr Kathy Brown.
The programme includes a tribute to Whylie, spotlighting her enduring impact on the company, having played a crucial role in shaping the musical identity of the NDTC throughout her illustrious four-decade career.
The performance will also feature the iconic Kumina, a seminal work arranged by Whylie in collaboration with the legendary Rex Nettleford in 1971. This globally acclaimed piece stands as a testament to Whylie’s artistic genius.
As a special treat, the University Singers will grace the stage as guest performers, adding an extra layer of musical brilliance to the event.
Among the performances, the audience can participate in Ewan Simpson’s Playtime” and Dr Brown’s recent arrangements of songs by Jimmy Cliff and Rita Marley.
The Yuletide spirit will also be embraced with Noel Dexter’s Christmas Songs, featuring timeless classics accompanied by live music.
Artistic Director Marlon D Simms expressed his excitement, stating, “We are really looking forward to the concert as a benefit for our dear beloved Marjorie Whylie, whom we call Aunt Marj. It is part of our continuing support for her because she is such an important part of the NDTC family.”
Music Captain Conrod Hall, thrilled to be part of this milestone event, emphasised Whylie’s deep connection within the NDTC.
“Aunt Marj will always be a part of our family. This show, as a benefit for her, demonstrates our ongoing commitment to giving back the love she gave to all of us,” he said.
