Man killed, baby and six adults shot in Dunkirk
A man was killed on Tuesday afternoon while a one-year-old boy and six other people were shot and injured by gunmen at Michael Manley Market on Pine Street in east Kingston.
Up to press time the murdered man’s identity had not been revealed by the police, however sources said the body is of brown complexion, slim build, and about 6ft long. Police sources said the man, who was clad in blue shorts and a grey T-shirt, appeared to be in his late 30s.
The infant and the others who were shot and injured were taken to hospital where they received treatment.
The baby was reportedly shot in his left foot. The other people, among them a woman, received injuries to the chest, arms, legs and buttocks.
It is alleged that the victims were at the market, located in McIntyre Villa (popularly known as Dunkirk) when a black motor vehicle stopped at the gate. Men armed with handguns and rifles reportedly alighted from the vehicle and opened fire, hitting the victims.
While the community was shocked by the killing, one woman shared that she was devastated upon learning that a child was shot.
“We just want the violence to stop; we don’t know where it coming from. My blood ran cold when I heard that the baby got shot. We have family and don’t want anything like this to happen to anybody. I pray night, morning, and noon for the violence in Jamaica to stop. My heart cries for the victims,” the woman said.
“I went to the shop a while ago and nobody was on the road,” she said in an apparent attempt to explain how tense the area is and that it is mostly members of the security forces moving around in the space.
One male resident called on the police to get to the bottom of what happened and put an end to the violence.
“Nobody wants violence in their community. We are saddened by the death of any person – whether we know them, yes or no. I just want the police to resolve this,” he said.
