Canada’s PM under fire for Jamaican vacation
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has come under fire from the opposition party for a recent trip to Jamaica.
Members of the Conservative party are calling on Canada’s conflict of interest and ethics commissioner to launch an investigation into the PM’s recent trip.
In a letter to the interim ethics commissioner Konrad von Finckenstein, MP Michael Barrett cited concerns about the prime minister’s shifting narrative regarding the cost of the family’s Caribbean vacation.
Barrett’s letter focused on the “serious” concerns around the evolving language regarding the cost of the trip, in addition to the potential ethical implications of luxurious gifts, citing the rules around accepting gifts.
“It is quite clear that the Frankfort villa has a defined commercial value, and that the corporate owners of Prospect Estate would be forgoing substantial revenue by letting the prime minister stay at the resort free of charge,” Barrett wrote in a letter to the commissioner.
According to the National Post, the Trudeau family stayed at a privately owned villa that rents for several thousand dollars per night, and is part of a resort that belongs to the family of businessman Peter Green, who has long-standing ties to the Trudeau family.
The resort is also reportedly where Trudeau and his family vacationed in 2022, a trip that raised similar concerns among opposition MPs.
