Pamputtae ecstatic over Netflix feature, says more acting gigs on the horizon

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Local Netflix users may have caught a glimpse of a number or familiar faces in the first season of the British television series ‘Champion’ — among them, that of female dancehall deejay Pamputtae during her cameo appearance. The entertainer says that since the series aired earlier this month, she has been receiving an outpouring of support from fans who believe the opportunity was well-deserved.

“I feel so happy, so good to hear everybody a say, ‘muma mi love da move deh and there’s more to come innu’. People tag me in posts about the show and tell me how glad they are to see me on TV. Dem tell me say mi humble as an entertainer in the game and that I deserved the spotlight,” she told Observer Online. “I’m just happy I got the chance to represent my country and my culture while doing something that I really love. Seeing myself on Netflix game me a feeling that I can’t even explain.”

Although no stranger to the world of acting, Pamputtae said the feature has already begun to propel her career in ways she only dreamed of. She said that since the series aired and people caught wind of her feature, she has been approached to be a part of other acting gigs.

“This ago make a huge impact in my career cuz it’s going to allow me to do something I’ve always wanted to do on a bigger scale. From I was going to school acting was one of my passions, mi good at it and was actually into that more but music ended up giving me my break. I am just a full entertainer, mi can deejay, dance, act, a lot of stuff and God just a lead right now and me just a follow,” she said. “This moment I believe can do a lot for me because people a see another side of Pamputtae, movie settings. Right now mi have people a approach me for a different movie so a just blessings and great things to come.”

In the series, Pamputtae shares screen time with the likes of Sheldon Shepherd and fellow entertainer Chi Ching Ching. In her scene, Pamputtae is filmed performing at a street dance session. Revealing that she was referred by another industry colleague for the role, the entertainer said she was given full creative control of her performance.

“I have to give ZJ Sparks a whole heap a love and blessings. She called me and told me the movie persons wanted somebody and she said what they described they wanted, she said she thought it fit me perfectly so big up Sparks. I went to the rehearsals but it was a done deal,” she said. “They didn’t tell me what to deejay they just told me to be myself. They sent me a riddim and mi just deejay. One take me do and dem just love it and accept it.”

Champion on Netflix tells the tale of a musical British-Jamaican family trying to maneuver the entertainment industry while addressing critical family issues. It has received rave reviews since its debut especially regarding the actors’ ability to encapsulate the Jamaican dialect.
