Luna Care offers period protection with eco-friendly panties

Luna Care offers period protection with eco-friendly panties

WITH its premiere line of menstrual underwear Luna Care Limited has since 2021 been on a mission to offer women greater protection and comfort during what many dread as the most uncomfortable time of the month.

The business, launched with a focus on feminine care, specialises in the sale and supply of a wide range of menstrual and other femcare products, pioneering what is now regarded as the market’s first line of period panties.

“The business was started to primarily provide females with safer, comfortable and more sustainable protection to the alternative traditional menstrual products. We recognised the need for additional solutions in the market and also for an eco-friendly and innovative option that would prioritise the well-being of women and the environment. This, while we also sought to break common menstrual taboos,” said De-Andrea Bryan, managing director of Luna Care, in sharing details about the evolution of her business with the Jamaica Observer recently.

Made from eco-friendly materials, the underwear carried by Luna Care reduces the environmental impact associated with disposable menstrual products.

“We cater to a diverse market, not just those in their reproductive years. From young teens just entering menstruation, to older women who may struggle with incontinence and post-partum issues, to all others seeking sustainable, safer and more comfortable menstrual solutions,” she further told
Sunday Finance of her client base and target market.

Describing the journey so far as challenging yet fulfilling, the young entrepreneur, who is also a GIS specialist, said her understanding of geography and the environment was what helped to fuel her desire for creating a product that is not only viable but also sustainable.

“Made from eco-friendly materials, the use of our underwear reduces the environmental impact associated with disposable menstrual products. We empower our customers to make environmentally conscious choices, contributing to a greener and healthier environment,” Bryan shared while touting the products’ ability to be washed and reused among their greatest competitive advantage.

“While our period underwear may have a slightly higher upfront cost, it proves to be more cost-effective in the long run. The reusable nature of our products eliminates the need for constant repurchase, saving users money over time,” she reasoned.

The line, which since the time of its inception has evolved to include a wider range of period underwear, now offers cuts in bikini, high-waist, briefs, hipsters, and seamless styles. The panties, which have a lifespan of up to two years if properly cared for, come with layered fabric protection and are said to be leak- and odour-free. Additionally, the products which range from moderate to super in absorbancy provide an alternative for women who suffer from allergic reactions to regular sanitary napkins.

“The underwear have absorbencies ranging from moderate (1-2 tampons equivalent) to super-absorbency (6 tampons). We also recently added to our collection a maternity underwear for expecting moms, providing them the protection they deserve without the compromise of comfort. The most sought-after product right now is our highwaist, high-absorbency underwear which holds the equivalent of 3-4 tampons and [is] made with inside layers of 100 per cent organic cotton,” Bryan shared.

The self-financed three-year-old business, staffed with administrative and technical support staff comprising some four other persons, operates mainly out of Kingston though deliveries are made islandwide. From its interactive website and social media platforms, customers also have the option to shop for products online or collect them from select pharmacy distribution outlets in and around the Corporate Area.

Bryan, though describing her company as a relatively “new player” in the market, said its growth has to date been positive and encouraging, propelled by a growing base of supportive customers. Even more upbeat about the future growth and expansion of her brand, the budding entrepreneur said the focus is to realise greater success locally and regionally.

“Over the next 3-5 years the vision is to expand our presence throughout the island and also beyond Jamaica as we look to gain entry in other countries across the Caribbean. The aim is to also reach a wider audience with our sustainable and empowering period underwear. As we move forward we plan to also introduce new styles and sizes that will further cater to the diverse preferences of consumers and likewise strengthen our efforts in the reduction of single-use menstrual products across the globe,” she said.
