Holmwood girls’ football coach elated with rollicking start
Following Holmwood Technical’s convincing win over Glenmuir in the first game of the 2024 Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/TIP Friendly Society girls’ football competition, Head Coach Maurice Duncan says there is no time to celebrate just yet.
He said much more work has to be done if they are to go deeper in the competition.
Playing at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Friday, last season’s runners-up Holmwood blanked Glenmuir High 11-0 in the 80-minute encounter, sending a loud signal to rivals that their run last year was no fluke.
Jamara James netted in the 20th, 40th, 53rd, and 75th minutes of play to lead the attack. Rhiannon Powell got a hat-trick, scoring in the 18th, 61st, and 68th. McKayda McLean notched goals in the 25th and 50th minutes, while Abby Kaye Reid (40+1) and Allyeah McAnuff (65th) were the other scorers.
Duncan stated that it was critical to set the tone for the remaining group games.
“It was very important to start our campaign with a win here,” Duncan told the
Jamaica Observer.
“We went to the finals last year, and we would have retained some of the players that participated. There’s still some work to be done, as you can see, but it is just one game at a time for me, and I am taking it that way,” he said.
Glenmiur did have a couple scoring chances, but their attackers failed to light the spark. Their intentions were good, but the finishing touches were off-colour.
“The opponent didn’t pose much of a challenge in front of goal, and we just capitalised on the chances that we got. We would have seen where we could have scored more goals or conceded as well, and so I will take the positive from this game and work on the negative. It is just one game at a time for me,” Duncan said.
