NWC commits to fixing stench affecting Greater Portmore High
NORMAL operations have returned to Greater Portmore High School in St Catherine following National Water Commission’s commitment to fix the problems at a nearby sewage treatment plant from which a foul odour has been emanating, affecting staff and students.
A release from the education ministry said, “In a meeting with the staff and representatives of the Ministry of Education and Youth’s Region 6 last week, the NWC’s Communications Manager Mr Delano Williams assured the meeting that long- and short-term measures would be implemented.”
These include:
1. De-bushing of specific areas along the plant
2. Continuous rehabilitation of the plant
3. Disinfection measures
4. Adjustment of the schedule to ensure that waste is dumped outside of school hours
5. Installation of aerators.
6. Creation of a WhatsApp group to facilitate frequent updates regarding the proposed measures.
The Ministry of Education and Youth’s community relations education officer for Region 6, Kereen Reid Clarke said because students, teachers and staff were being affected it was important the matter be addressed to reduce instances of disruption of regular school operations.
