KC, Wolmer’s Girls out in front at Corporate Area Champs

KINGSTON College’s (KC) Yourie Lawrence-Clarke and Mickayla Gardener of Wolmer’s High School for Girls showcased their potential as top contenders for the Class One titles at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships next month with victories at the Corporate Area Championships on Friday.

Lawrence-Clarke dominated the Class One 100m event, winning with a personal-best time of 10.55 seconds. Shaquane Gordon of Calabar secured second place in 10.59, while third place went to Damor Miller from Excelsior in 10.63. In the girls’ equivalent, Gardener, in excellent form this season, clinched the gold medal with a time of 12.21. Excelsior’s Sharlla Whittaker finished second in 12.56, and Kyanna Scott of Wolmer’s took third place in 12.79.

KC, the defending champions, lead the standings with 146 points heading into today’s final day of the two-day championships. They are followed by Calabar (121), Jamaica College (JC) (106), Excelsior (56), Wolmer’s (52), St George’s College (43), and Campion College (11). On the girls’ side, Wolmer’s leads the standings with 151 points, four ahead of defending champions Excelsior (147). They are followed by Immaculate (142), The Queen’s School (77), St Andrew High (76), Alpha (65), and Merl Grove (46.5).

Excelsior’s Malike Nugent caused a major upset by winning the boys’ Class Two 100m in a personal-best time of 10.75. Nyrone Wade from KC, the race favourite, finished second in 10.79 while third place went to Tyreece Foreman of St George’s College’s (STGC) in 10.90. In the girls’ Class Two 100m final Wolmer’s Tiana Marshall claimed the gold medal with a time of 11.92. Tashay Faulkner of Alpha took home the silver with a personal-best time of 12.32, and the bronze went to Immaculate’s Shevi-Anne Shim in 12.33.

Wolmer’s Boys’ Mario Ross clocked a personal-best time of 10.99 to win the boys’ Class 100m event. KC’s Orandy Campbell secured second place in 11.41, while Naethan Bryan of STGC finished third in 11.42. Wolmer’s also claimed victory in the girls’ Class Three event, with Natrece East clocking a season’s best time of 11.67 to win the final. Kayla Johnson from Immaculate finished second in 11.93, while third place went to Excelsior’s Tashika Thompson in 12.43.

St Andrew High’s Jowana Pennant won the Class Four Girls’ 100m in a personal-best time of 12.68, ahead of race favourite Mick-Kayla Gardener of Wolmer’s (12.75), while third place went to Aliyah Ross from Alpha in 12.87. In other events, KC’s Ethan Gioko secured victory in the boys’ Class One 1500m event while Jeneail Henry from Wolmer’s claimed the girls’ equivalent.

In the boys’ Class Two 1500m race Nahashon Ruto took first place while The Queen’s School’s Hannah Charles set a personal-best time in the girls’ Class Two 1500m event. Nathan Wade from KC dominated the boys’ Class One long jump event, and Immaculate’s Mireya Simpson achieved a personal best mark to win the girls’ Class One long jump competition. Shelley-Ann Taylor of Excelsior secured the gold medal in the girls’ Class Two long jump event. Immaculate claimed a one-two finish in the girls’ Class Four high jump, and Kariecia Morrison of Wolmer’s won the girls’ Class Three high jump event.
